Anyone who has read the book or seen the film of The Color Purple could not help but be moved by Quincy Jones' lyrical soundtrack. The tracks tell the story from beginnning to end and, even though I did not know anything about the story when I first listened to the music, I knew the story from just listening to the songs and themes on the album.
By the time the theme for the mail box is reprised at the end of the album, I was in tears and knew that the film was going to have the same effect.

Speilberg definately made the right move by hiring Jones instead of John Williams for this project.
Highly recommended. IF you can find a copy.

After many searches to find this soundtrack I have finally got my hands on it for a reasonable price. Anyone that loves the film will enevitably love the sountrack the mixture of emotion in the film is captured brilliantly on it. A definate must for all fans of this classic film.

I received this soundtrack as a birthday gift and it is the best CD in my collection and the best birthday gift I've ever received. The music inspires, uplifts, and relaxes you. "Miss Celie's Blues (Sister)" and "Maybe God is Trying to Tell you Somthin' are my favorites because I like the messages in both songs. When listening to the CD, it takes me back to the scenes in the movie when that particular song is playing. I love Whoopi's expression when Shug is singing "Sister" to her. It always brings a smile to my face. I will definitely enjoy this CD for a long time.

The soundtrack to the move of The Color Purple is one of my favorite albums of all time. I have been listening to it since I bought my extended play cassette version when I was in high school (and had to save up to afford it). Not only does listening to the album take one through the emotional experience of watching the movie (or reading the book), but it also stands alone. The music is sophisticated and deeply touching - often evoking a visceral and spiritual response that is damn near inspirational. I cannot find words to describe how much Quincy Jones' music from The Color Purple has influenced my life and my musical sensabilities. Simply brilliant.

Words alone cannot begin to describe the beautiful music of these two cds! I am fortunate enough to own 2 original copys of both The Color Purple & Roots, both cds are incredibly inspirational and proof of Quincy Jones' Genius. The music is so powerful, at times it makes you smile, at times it'll make you cry, but above all, its music that leaves you with such an appreciation for love & life, its a true treasure to have. The music lifts your spirits, its a combination of classical, spiritual, blues and jazz. I wish everyone could experience the power of this music, its amazing, it ranks at the top of my music library as some of the best music I've ever heard. Although long out of print, I'm not surprise at how expensive the asking price has grown for those who have copies in their possession. If you can get your hands on a copy, trust me, its worth it!!
