Biography

It was the year 1990, Jesper decided to take leave of the band Ceremonial Oath, that he was currently in, together with Anders Fridén and Anders Iwers (Tiamat)

He wanted to make music in a different direction, and he teamed up with Johan Larsson and Glenn Ljungström to form IN FLAMES. The gang made a demo and shipped it off to Wrong Again records in order to get a ... Read more in Amazon's In Flames Store

5.0 out of 5 stars The last great In Flames album 10 Jan 2008
By Hedon
Format:Audio CD
You all know In Flames. You know the score with this band. Colony, while not drastically different to Whoracle, it's a bit lighter and easier to get into yet also a bit faster and more punchy.

It also shows a great deal of variety. Embody the Invisible is a great opener with a wickedly cheesy lead and almost a punky feel to it. Scorn and Coerced Coexistence are classic In Flames which brilliantly show of a fetish for twin guitar melodies and uplifting leads. And then the title track with its tight grooves; a great head-banging number. The best has to be Ordinary Story and the brooding Zombies Inc, which show that In Flames can easily match speed and aggression with atmosphere and melancholy.

It's not their heaviest and it's not exactly brutal or extreme, but this seems to be when In Flames managed to hit the nail right on the head with their desire to combine melody and aggression. And it is without a doubt their most energetic and passionate performance (dare I say upbeat?); every song just blasts out the speakers like there's no tomorrow and each member of the band really put a lot into this. Even Whoracle, which arguably had better songs (and better vocals) doesn't match this album on the sheer energy and intensity of the performance

If their one point I could complain about with Colony it's that Anders voice started to get a little bit weaker, but this is no wear near as bad as the vocals on Clayman. Thankfully, clean vocals are used sparingly.

In retrospect, this is a final testament to the greatness that is In Flames and their last true melodic death album; a real piece of metal history. If you've any interest in melodic death or In Flames you really should get this along with Whoracle and Jester Race.

4.0 out of 5 stars This was my first In Flames CD... 3 Mar 2004
By M. Keil
Format:Audio CD
This was the first album by In Flames that I've bought and I'm thoroughly impressed. Their music is both catchy and powerful.
The first two tracks are an amazing introduction. 'Embody The Invisible' has a cheezy start but you want to hear it more and more. 'Ordinary Story' is equally as amazing in delivery and is head-bang-a-plenty.
Other good tracks are 'Colony', 'Zombie Inc' and 'Resin'.
The only reason this CD didn't get 5 stars was that it looses focus a little towards the end, but the best songs on this album easily compensate for this. For me, this was an amazing introduction to In Flames and I will be buying more very soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Melodic Metal 7 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I think the most important thing to state about this album is that the traces of death metal that In Flames carried along finally seemed to disappear. The only remnants are the howls of Anders Friden's vocals. This is not neccesarily a bad thing. They upped the melodies in rhythm guitars as well as lead lines and ultimately created a more focused album which moves on from Whoracle quite well. The only minor quibble with this album would be that the drums are slightly unimaginative but otherwise this is a great METAL album that all fans of the melodic genre should own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Colony 1 Oct 2005
Format:Audio CD
Another of In Flames' great albums. Colony is similar to Clayman and it sets out the intent right from the off with the pick slide and melody of Embody the Invisible.
The best tracks are probably:
the experimental Scorn, repeating and slightly re-addressing itself as the song progresses;
the awesome harmony of Resin;
the heavy riffing of Coerced Coexistence;
title track Colony with its amazing drum patterns and awesome hooks.
A superb album and surely one of In Flames' best.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Inflames we miss! 16 Dec 2011
Format:Audio CD
This is inflames last "good" album for sure! which i guess makes it an obituary for their earlier albums - and a good swansong it is. I find the further you go back through Inflames' discography the better the music gets and this is awesome so i hope you get the picture!

5.0 out of 5 stars beyond the realms of a masterpiece 22 Feb 2006
By sean paul mccann VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
May i be totally honest?when i first heard this i wasnt blown away as i had heard clayman before this and that is one masterpiece if ever i heard one,but in time i learnt to realise that this is the first world class in flames album,an album that is something more than flawless.Now i know fans of the bands earlier albums will go mad at that statement but believe me when i say,that i have all of their old stuff and love it all,but,this is their first album with the current line up and the songs ebb and flow into each other and the result is an album that is as catchy as a baseball and as aggressive as an line of gorillas when there is only one banana left.

the album opens like a tornado in your living room with the all time classic embody the invisible,ordinary story follows and it is evident that the band are more melodic than ever and the songs are effortless in their fusion of metal and melody,scorn follows and is certainly one of the greatest in flames songs ever.Other classics such as colony,behind space 99 and insipid 2000 can also be found here and it is a case of accepting the simple truth readers that this is the band in flames always wanted to be,and from this desire came their ultimate masterpieces clayman and reroute to remain.In flames are certainly a band that can cause two friends to fight over which in flames period bore the greatest albums,it was from this record in 1999 that in flames really found their fire.
