From Amazon.co.uk

As a producer, Luc Besson (The Transporter series, Taken, District B-13) has made extremely profitable B-movie hay out of a fairly strict formula incorporating whisper-thin femme fatales, parkour, Gaultier, and guns. Colombiana, another Besson collaboration with director Olivier Megaton (Transporter 3), doesn't exactly blaze new trails, but the combination of Zoe Saldana's fierce performance and a dash of oddball surrealism sure makes the running time zoom by. Purportedly beginning as a sequel to The Professional, the story follows a beautiful South American assassin bent on rubbing out the murderers of her parents. Unfortunately, the closer she gets to her drug lord prey, the more her own loved ones (including Michael Vartan and an amusingly hambone Cliff Curtis) are put at risk. Things go boom, frequently. Director Megaton handles the action with the rapid-cut, blue-filtered zing common to the Besson factory, but things receive a definite boost via the efforts of Saldana, whose performance combines the intensely physical with an appealing soulfulness. Whether slithering through air ducts in a skin-tight cat suit or using a toothbrush as an impromptu weapon, she somehow manages to maintain an air of beyond-the-call gravitas. Also of note are the scenes of the heroine plying her lethal trade, some of which bear the funky logic-defying influence of Mario Bava's great fugue-state caper movie Danger: Diabolik. Ultimately, although the story elements and secondary character motivations rarely hang together, Colombiana's distinguishing marks help place the film somewhere above the level of guilty pleasure. When pitted against the likes of a mobster with a glass-paneled shark tank for a dance floor, reality can take a seat, frankly. --Andrew Wright

Product Description

1992. Colombia. Nine-year-old Cataleya witnesses her parents’ murder. Barely escaping the massacre herself, she takes refuge in the United States with Emilio, her gangster uncle… Fifteen years later, Cataleya works for him as a hit woman. Her calling card--an orchid drawn on the chests of her victims--is a message to her parents’ assassins. For Cataleya is determined to see her vengeance through to the bitter end… even if it means losing everything she loves.

Colombiana stars Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Star Trek), is produced and written by Luc Besson (The Transporter 1-3, Taken and Leon) and directed by Olivier Megaton (The Transporter 3).

5.0 out of 5 stars "..BRILLIANT.." 21 April 2012
Format:Blu-ray
This is a very well constructed revenge thriller with a brilliant story thats well paced and action packed from start to finish, very gritty and well directed with some great editing during the action like you expect from any film produced by Luc Besson, the cast is amazing Zoe Saldana plays a believable assassin and a very elegant beauty she is too, this type of film has certainly been done before but Colombiana still finds itself being original and very smart and slick and certainly is very entertaining and worth every penny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just buy it! 26 Jan 2012
Format:DVD
I approached this film apprehensively, especially considering the clichés which abound in most revenge type films. Fortunately, the film is a masterpiece and Cataleya (Zoe Saldana) brings a vulnerability that we can all relate to, as well as awesome bada**ery. There is plenty of action, but it is done tastefully and always propels the story further. In terms of romance, there is a sweet storyline where we come to understand who Cataleya is as a woman. It is done tastefully and avoids the cringe factor. Family is also a major theme, and this is where the emotional roller-coaster stems from. Put simply, Colombiana is a fantastic film which you'll be happy to watch over again. Give it a chance and you might just be surprised.

Two big thumbs up!

Columbiana's biggest asset is Avatar's Zoe Saldana (the big blue girl, Neytiri? That's her).
Lithe, with a very expressive and sympathetically likeable face and amazing physique, she convinces as agile and dangerous enough to pull of most of the insane stunts and vicious combat that goes into this aggressive and speedy actioner.
The film has her as the lone survivor of a massacre when her mother and father are executed by the local drug dealer, and she flees to the U.S. to be raised by distant family where she chooses to become an assassin. So far, so ludicrous - but this is produced by Luc Besson, the man who gave us Bruce Willis as a futuristic cab driver who saves the world, and Jason Statham as a criminal courier who can kick-arse while covered in motor oil and dancing about on bike pedals. As a result, we get a plot where a girl outraged at the execution of 2 people happily kills 23 just to get the attention of the drug cartel, and the Police fail to consult a botanist despite the flower drawing at each scene, instead getting their best clue from a bizarre and unlikely source.
Despite such bonkers silliness, when it works, Columbiana does work excellently as a firing-on-all cylinders gun-fest. The violence is uproarious and over the top, the direction solid and slick (much better than Megaton's slightly limp 'Transporter 3'), and the effects are terrific.
Don't bother watching this if you're annoyed by the lack of a sensible plot, as it will bug the hell out of you. If you're more forgiving of a film as long as it delivers bag-loads of fantastic action, then this is a viable option. Go enjoy.
