Product Description

This is the tropical sound of Colombian dancehalls and clubs in the 1960s and '70s, when the legendary Discos Fuentes record label led the way. The sounds emanating from the Barrios and beaches of Colombia are a unique mixture of Latin and Afro Rhythms, the Highlife and Rumba of West Africa and the Calypso of the Caribbean, as well as the Tropical Rhythms of the Colombian Cumbia, Gaita, Fandango and Porro… driving percussion, swinging horns, hot pianos and jumping basslines - this music was made for dancing! All tracks are taken from the original master tapes and fully re-mastered, many never before reissued or heard outside of Colombia.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fierce and rare Colombian grooves 5 Feb 2008
Format:Audio CD
These are all gems, for anyone interested in Latin dance music this collection is essential. Disco's Fuentes is the Fania of South America and Fruko y sus Tesos were dropping salsa as hard as anything coming from N.Y.C.. Storming Montuno's, heavy, heavy Cumbia, the heady whiff of West African highlife and psychedelic bugalu. Check out The Latin Brothers-Las Calenas Son Como Los Flores for ridiculously ahead of it's time Latin hip hop, I played it Saturday night in a club and it blew up.... Soundway comes through again..

4.0 out of 5 stars Colmbian music with a twist 31 May 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Along with some great Cuban-style piano tumbaos, some interesting variations from the usual latin band instruments including clarinets to give a 40s jazz feel and even an accordian solo in a fast salsa piece. Some particularly fine cumbias, fast salsa in this varied selection of rhythms, big brassy sounds and fierce percussion The best gem is 'Lucho Bermudez' a cumbia with a swirl of of clarinet amid the blast of brass and girly chorus. Party time again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Colombia golden age the real deal 1 April 2008
By beezerminder - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
These sound like the original artists, hits from the 60s and 70s that I used to hear at latin parties with all kinds of south americans, not just colombians, who considered a lot of these "classics" for party music. It has a good variety, moving from salsa to cumbia to other rhythms. . .fun. I think colombian music is way underappreciated in northamerica; we mostly hear only NY/PR salsa if any. I like to listen to it while driving or doing something active but I don't think the mix has quite the right flow to be a fantastic party record on its own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cliché use of spanglish to denote heat 7 July 2007
By Jonathan Green - Published on Amazon.com

Wow, this is a great record! I was hipped to it on The World radio show and bought it as an adjunct to my recent interest in Fania. This may be the best thing to come from Colombia since Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Discos Fuentes offered the best of the local musical styles by top-flight musicians. Classic and ahead of it's time, it's a challenge to figure the exact moment of each impeccably well recorded track. These guys may be South America's answer to Atlantic Records.

I anxiously await volume 2. Please!

5.0 out of 5 stars You will not be bored by any track 23 July 2008

I bought this album on a whim after it caught my eye on a record store shelf. And then I listened to it for 3 months straight! Every song is so different. The layers of sounds are so unique and blow you away along with making you want to move. The liner notes are excellently written and the album covers of the Golden Age are priceless. I'm not one for World music so this is kind of a big deal for me. Every time I play it at a party, friends demand copies. I'm going to go listen to it right now...

5.0 out of 5 stars Golden age of music 11 Feb 2008
By S. R. Hussey - Published on Amazon.com

I bought this cd without knowing much about it; I just liked the sound clips. After listening to it many times I can now say the purchase was wise. This is excellent music making that makes you want to dance and puts a smile on your face.

If you have overdosed on POP music trends and the Grammys just makes you sick then you owe it to yourself to check out this music. Real talent and real entertainment in a golden age style.

I bought the CD because it reminds me of my father. This was the music that he loved and grew up with. I still have his old records and it is great to find some of the old Colombian music on CDs. Que Viva Colombia!!!
