This book is the first I've seen to present the modern Welsh language as it is actually spoken, rather than attempting a compromise between colloquial patterns and the far more conservative written language. The dialogues are entertaining, practical and idiomatic. The same author's grammar of modern Welsh ties in with it well, for those who want to delve deeper. Combine this with the new (I emphasize new) Teach Yourself Welsh book and you can't go wrong. Some of Mr King's explanations might be controversial with Welsh grammarians, but they make sense and the whole sphere could do with some iconoclasm. He's edited a very good dictionary too in the Oxford University series, and it's the only one I could honestly recommend to a beginner.
