4.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says 27 Feb 2009
By CTYDEHT
Format:Paperback
If you follow the advice given by the book ie BE PATIENT and persist then this course, especially if you have the CDs as well, will give you a thorough grounding in Ukrainian. It is not a phrase book but a complete course and you will need to make an effort: Ukrainian is very different to English. If you can also get hold of Pimsleur's Essential Ukrainian 1 (unfortunately it does not appear to be available new)to listen to as well then that will help with pronunciation. I am only giving it 4 stars because, as another review points out, there are slight differences, which can confuse, between the spoken and written exercises. All in all good value. The long review below does NOT actually recommend any alternative book or course at an affordable price. It appears to be this or "Teach Yourself Ukrainian" and of the two I prefer this one but that is simply a matter of taste.. I do not say that Ukrainian is easy nor that this book is excellent: it is not you will need to read some of the explanations several times before you grasp them. Hard work will be needed but with only the first 5 chapters of this and "Pimsleur's Ukrainian" I survived well enough in Ukrainia, communicated with the locals, and caught all the correct trains etc.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK, but not great 8 Dec 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio Cassette
I found that the cassettes and book started out slowly and well but then became extremely difficult around the 3rd and 4th chapters. For example, in the 3rd lesson on tape, the dialog was taped with a lot of background noise (realistic for the restaurant setting). This makes it very difficult for a beginner to understand the new words! The beginning spent a lot of time on phonemes and the alphabet- both very helpful.

4.0 out of 5 stars This manual gets you going quickly! 6 Nov 1998
By Lynn Duchez Bycko - Published on Amazon.com

Ukrainian as a second language for English speakers is especially difficult, because the student must learn a new phonetic system via a cyrillic alphabet. "Colloquial Ukrainian" starts with understanding the cyrillic phonex and teaches beginning grammar through common dialogue.

Great book to begin self-instruction of the language. It would be improved if the dictionary pages included more vocabulary.

3.0 out of 5 stars get a dictionary 5 Mar 2009
By perekladach - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The author of this book has a very chatty writing style, which would go over better with me if he had done a more thorough job of glossing his material. There are too many words used in the lessons that can't be found in the glossary at the back, so either access to a native speaker or a dictionary will be necessary to avoid becoming too frustrated. That being said, the coverage of the grammar is not too bad. One major plus is the excellent treatment of Ukrainian phonics at the beginning of the book-careful practice with it will reward a beginning student with a good, authentic pronunciation- it is in fact one of the best treatments of phonics I've seen for any Slavic language.
