I'm currently about a third of the way through this book and CD set. It's generally quite good. It has a nice balance of vocabulary, grammar, reading texts, and exercises for you do to along the way (with the answers in the back). And of course, the audio CDs are very helpful for pronunciation (which is a 'must' with Swedish). It does move along at quite a fast pace, so the complete beginner may find it quite challenging. I already knew a fair amount of Swedish vocabulary before I started so this wasn't too much of a problem for me.

On the downside, it is full of mistakes, and clearly hasn't been proof read before going to publication. For example, in the glossary at the back, it states that the word for 'violin' is 'viol' (wrong) when throughout the book it refers to violin as 'fiol' (correct). On the audio CD, the speaker states the price of a train ticket as "tvahundranittiotre" when in the book it's "etthundranittiotre". Then on page 67, it notes 'Flicka' as meaning 'The girl' when actually 'Flickan' means 'The girl'. These may seem like little errors, but they add up and can become confusing and rather irritating. There are probably loads more that I haven't noticed and I'm only a third of the way through!

This is a great shame, because were it not for this sloppiness, I think this would be a very solid and proficient introductory guide to Swedish. Despite the mistakes, I'd still say it was worth the buy as I believe it's still better than the 'Teach Yourself Swedish' package.

Colloquial Swedish (Colloquial Series)

I completed the Colloquial Danish course several years ago and found it excellent, so I'm now a fluent speaker.

Colloquial Swedish is a different proposition. It is OK for the seasoned language learner with some existing knowledge but it would be quite daunting for a raw beginner to get to grips with. The grammar coverage is thorough and there are plenty of exercises for practice. The discs are a must if you want any chance of mastering the pronunciation. The speakers do speak far too quickly at the start and many of the texts in the book are not present on the discs. The glossaries at the back are completely inadequate to use the book, so you also need a decent Swedish/English dictionary.

The book is also absolutely full of errors - it clearly wasn't checked properly before publication!!!

I was looking for something to take me on from the excellent "Teach Yourself Swedish Conversation" and the title "Colloquial Swedish" suggested this would be what I was looking for - snappy and fast paced. Well, I was wrong. If you like learning languages by listening to long lists of words that have nothing in common except they contain the same consonant this might suit you. Oh yes, and the CD seems to be narrated by John Major. I was asleep before lesson 2.

I used this book to start learning Swedish before moving there; I found that it gave me a very good introduction.

The presentation of the subject material is less childish than other language texts that I have used (including other books in the Colloquial series), and the lesson structure worked well for me.

Very Important 25 Aug. 2008
By Liviu Florea - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
The way the book is presented on amazon is very misleading. First it is offered with Colloquial Swedish (Colloquial Series (Book Only)) (Paperback) at the price of 68 $ and by being so you might thing it is workbook to the first ,offered with the cassettes and the Cd-s. This fact is reinforces when you read the product description: first 344pages, this one 288 pages. YOU are wrong. It is the same book in both cases the difference is that on the second package you receive the cd-s and cassettes, so if you fell for the trick and buy both for 68 $(thinking there are two different products from the same learning package) you would end like me: buying two, identical books. The reason I am not returning the first one is that shipping from Romania to USA is expensive and takes a lot of time so I will have to keep it or try to sell it.

Anyway this particular package priced ad 42$ is quite good and really helps you with your first steps in Swedish. There are 17 chapters focusing on the vocabulary you would need in various situations from day-to-day life: from introducing yourself to cooking, going on holiday, learning. In every chapter basic grammar issues or rules are discussed.

I am giving this product only 4 stars because I a feel cheated by amazon.

Required for class 25 Oct. 2007

I purchased this book as it was required for a "Beginners 2" class at the Swedish American Museum in Chicago. It's very informative as far as grammar goes; however, some of the vocabulary is a bit extreme. I'm not sure when I'll use many of the words that I'm being exposed to. There is a CD that's available; however, I was not offered it when I purchased the book. I think that it should be "suggested" to get the CD as well, which helps a lot for pronunciation. Love the class and looking forward to surprising some relatives with my improved Swedish!

Ideal for Advanced Swedish Speakers 5 Jun. 2012
By KiJansson - Published on Amazon.com

This is an excellent book and would be ideal for someone who has some moderate to advanced Swedish language knowledge. Don't let the first chapter featured on the website fool you! The first chapter is a quick icebreaker but the chapters that follow become more and more advanced. It can be quite challenging to start language lessons with this book because its pace is a little more advanced than other books on the market. It is NOT an ideal book for tourists, it can be a great resource to those who are looking to move to Sweden or spend a significant amount of time there, especially if you are enrolling in Swedish courses in the country! What I really enjoy is the mini history or narratives throughout the book; they become progressively more advanced as the chapters continue. I really appreciate this book and think it's a great resource. As a person who is currently moving to Sweden, I recommend this product to those who intend to learn Swedish long term; tourists need not waste their money on this book. It is far too advanced and unnecessary for a holiday trip :)

I have bought this book based on the review of the users. It appeared to be a really nice book, although I didnt know that it also has audio cds that I had to buy separately, this is a really good book. All the explanations are detailed with examples and pronunciations.I would recommend you to buy this book if you are a beginner who wanted to learn swedish.

Best Swedish Language Book 24 Aug. 2012
By John - Published on Amazon.com

I use Rosetta Stone Swedish ... which is good but does not give simple grammar rules which makes it a lot easier to fall back on when in doubt. As in English "i before e except after c or when sounded like a in weight or sleigh."

With "Swedish: The Complete Course for Beginners," I had an "A Ha" moment when I saw the rules for nouns, adjectives and verbs and was able to remember and apply them.

I also appreciate that this book uses colloquial Swedish and takes into consideration different dialects. We like visiting Skåne in the Southern part which is covered a little in the book in terms of dialect and culture. (e.g., Lund, Sweden and Malmö, Sweden.)

While visiting there recently, I used the term (Do you speak Swedish) "Talar du Svenska" and was corrected by several young people ... "Pratar du Svenska," (Do you talk/chat) said some. This leads me to believe that while Talar is probably correct, some people say Pratar. I find it a good companion to Rosetta Stone, Swedish version 3
