4.0 out of 5 stars concise 6 Oct 2002
By simon gurney HALL OF FAME
Format:Audio Cassette
having been through several introductory spanish books this one rates pretty highly, especially as a companion to some of the more common titles, the approach is quick and clear. it covers a lot of material, in a fairly typical format, example passges, then break downs of each point covered, it doesnt become to bogged down in vocabulary, and the dictionary at the back is a little incomplete, there are more than a few words for which an accompanying dictionary is neccesary. The book ploughs very well through verb forms and grammar points, and each chapter revolves around a common topic.
sits well as part of a spanish introduction in conjunction with other books ect.

4.0 out of 5 stars Colloquial Spanish 29 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback
I like this type of language book because it teaches the language in a systematic way, each layer slowly building onto the previous one. The exercises are useful and help to reinforce learning. I imagine this book might not be best suited to some younger people unless they like learning in the systematic way of a previous generation. However, if one takes the time and effort to work through this book a good understanding of the language should emerge with apposite use of grammar and modern usage of words and phrases. I found that I was quickly able to use Spanish in a correct way in letters (albeit on a small scale). It was a much more useful book than the one I currently use at nightschool, that seems more geared to young people and their social contacts. While I appreciate that language teaching has to 'move with the times,' sometimes this seems to be at the expense of a good grounding in grammar. 'Colloquial Spanish' addresses this problem and balances the needs of an older generation with the needs of the young.

4.0 out of 5 stars My favorite Spanish lessons: 30 Mar 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
My favorite Spanish lessons:

Given, that I have only minor problems with the English language, this remains my favorite Spanish lessons for refreshing my spoken and written Spanish. Very useful for writing letters, and very actual due to the modern Spain, I think.

2.0 out of 5 stars Colloquial Spanish CD 29 Aug 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Disappointing: compared with the Collins 'Easy Learning' series, much less helpful in grasping meanings and developing vocabulary. Little repetition of phrases, so hard to tell what is said or to remember.

4.0 out of 5 stars A beginners book, but not for beginners. 24 Mar 2010
By Jikky
Format:Paperback
When I first started learning Spanish I must have read through 8 books for beginners. This one I found too difficult at first. However, about 6 months later,
I found it much more useful. I like the way it uses short conversations instead of just quick phrases. There's a good balance of English - sorry, - Irish - explanation, with plenty of Spanish. Later on in the tapes there are quite long passages in Spanish, which I haven't found in any other book. These are good to test how well you're picking up the language. I'd recommend this book, but not for
absolute beginners.

2.0 out of 5 stars English-Spanish or Irish-Spanish? 12 Mar 2006
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Several things put me off this course with its accompanying cds. Most of all, the teacher's very strong Northern Irish accent - I cannot comment on her Spanish one - is extremely distracting when one is concentrating on sounds. Second, the recorded text is not closely enough related or covered in the book. Third, from my limited knowledge of Spain and the Spanish I do not believe it correct to address people one does not know in the informal second personal singular - this (though qualified later) weakened my confidence in the substance of the course.
