Marta Pirnat-Greenberg should be very proud of this book.

Finally we've got a well-thought out, logical, interesting book, that doesn't skate over the complicated grammar of Slovene but addresses it in a very manageable and concise manner.

I love this book. This edition of colloquial Slovene has been completely re-written and it seems the author has learnt well from the mistakes of the former (not her book but a lot of useful feedback arose from it no doubt).

Marks indicating pronounciation feature all the way through the book, which a lot of people will find practical and useful.

If you have an interest in Slovene, try it out. Where else are you going to get a good book on Slovene? Do they generally exist?

I am not even being paid to say this, buy it if you're curious about Slovene.

I've had an interest in Slovenia and Slovene for a few years now and spent a lot of time looking at the resources available or English speakers to use for self-study, and up until now the pickings have been slim! This year though I spent six weeks in Ljubljana at the Poletna Šola Slovenskega Jezika and was desperate for something to use so I wouldn't forget what I've learned over the summer.

The old edition of Colloquial Slovene simply wasn't up to scratch; whole grammatical structures were largely ignored and the author even went as far as to say that you don't really need to learn to use the dual to get along fine in Slovene, which is ridiculous. This new edition has a new author though, and she's made the book as comprehensive as possible.

Each unit starts with a dialogue between the protagonists of the story, who talk to each other in quite a formal, standardised version of Slovene (once you've spent some time in Slovenia you begin to realise that no-one really speaks standard Slovene, but don't let that put you off). The stress is marked throughout the book, which is fantastic, and the vowels O and E are marked to show whether they are open or closed and E is also marked to show when it is pronounced as a neutral vowel. Following on from that we get new vocabulary, with any irregular forms also given, and then some very comprehensive grammatical explanations. Then there are some exercises to practice what you have learned, and then another dialogue showing Slovene in another register. I particularly find the dialogues between the students helpful; being a student myself, it shows the way the language is used amongst people my age, and I've found it very helpful in understanding and being able to talk to my Slovene friends.

If the old edition of this book put you off, don't let it; this version is vastly improved and is really a fantastic addition to anyone's collection of Slovene books. If you've never used the old edition, count yourself lucky that you can save yourself time and money by going straight to this version.

The cover of the book doesn't say it all 25 May 2012

I was looking for a Slovenian language text that had CD's or tapes I could use to study. I blew up the cover of this book in the Amazon ad, and it appeared that the CD's were included. They were not. I went back to the ad and tried to figure out how to order the CD's and could not. I went to the publisher's website and their cost was three times the cost of the Amazon book. I returned it.
