The colloquial series is often let down by it's academic style but this book comes closer to the Teach yourself format and I don't think it can be beaten as a beginners course. It's up todate and it's interestingly written. The only bad thing are the comprehension texts. There is no translation of them and they are repeated on the recording. Why repeat when you can rewind and I would have referred to hear some recordings of some other things in the chapters. The upcoming teach yourself book may be better but until then this is the best book there is if you require something more than a phrase book and want to hear what you are reading.

Deeply impressed with the smooth, beautifully presented and clear chapters progressing quickly but logically from the alphabet to greetings and finishing off with job interviews. It isn't one of those language books that tries to get you to translate sentences like, "This sequence is not logical" or "My greeting card is a promotional copy" in chapter 2. It goes sequentially through topics of high interest and offers clear and concise explanations of the grammar rules introduced. I honestly wish all language instruction books could be this logical and simply presented. Nice and comedic illustrations and a beautiful front cover top this off. Like I said, a perfect language book!

This is a very good product, though the CD is unusable without the book. I don't know enough Farsi to comment on the pronunciation and usage, but contrary to what another reviewer has said the Colloquial series is usually less academic than the Teach Yourself series. In the Teach Yourself series, there is more polite sometimes unusable language. In defense of the Teach Yourself series, the CDs can be used more easily without the book, as there is an English-speaking guide (which is lacking on the Colloquial CD). The Teach Yourself and Colloquial Persian series are quite comparable--both good. The best layout, however, belongs to How to Speak, Read and Write Persian (for which I do not have the CD).
I don't think it would be a mistake to buy any one of the above-mentioned. However, if I were to buy only a book, it would be the last book I mentioned, as the Farsi font is thinner and easier to read, plus the book is bigger (L x W).

Good book. Has transliteration and indication of how to pronounce. Split into units of everyday subjects, with dialogues, vocabulary list and exercises in each. Read more

It's a great book. I have used at least 3 other books to start with Persian and this one is definitely the best.
