5.0 out of 5 stars Best book for learning Hungarian I found 18 April 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A very good book for learning or remembering back Hungarian. The book covers most parts of Hungarian grammar, also it uses a large vocabulary of common words that would make a foundation for using the grammar in other situations. It uses a progressive approach to build up your knowledge. The CDs are helpful to get the correct phonetics and intonation that although not as terrific as they seem when described, are difficult to figure unless you have access to a native speaker. Unfortunately the audio drills are not enough to learn from them directly on the run, they are mostly useful for phonetics and intonation. Anyway I would recommend to purchase the book with the CDs since it is not expensive (the edition I purchased incorporated the CDs, although Amazon description does not state it clearly, look at the red triangle on top right). Three words seem to appeal to the reader, colloquial, complete and beginner; the key word is complete, the book is indeed complete. I don't want to say that if you are a complete beginner the book is not good for you, but it is not for the faint hearted and many hints and even puns would be lost to you. Lessons are long, a lot of vocabulary is covered, grammar is unusual... The language used is standard Hungarian, both formal an informal speech are present, so don't be discouraged by the colloquial word in the front page. Explanations are straightforward and no linguistics are necessary, If you work hard you will know Hungarian at the end, not just a bunch of topic sentences.
This edition is a lot larger and improved than the anterior editions, I would have not doubt about getting this one. Also it complements well with "Hungarian: An essential grammar" by the same author, that again covers something more than the essentials.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very user friendly and well structured. 4 Jun 2014

I have several hungarian language books, but this is the best by far. To get the best out of this resource, consider buying the CD's as well.

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless without audio 9 Feb 2012
By Picasso
As with the previous reviewer, I purchased the kindle edition expecting integrated sound, but amazingly the audio is not integrated with the text.

This is like purchasing a movie with no sound or sound with no picture - an absolute waste of money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Kindle version is infuriating 29 Dec 2011
Format:Audio CD
This really does not work on a Kindle. Colloquial Hungarian was recommended to me and I bought the Kindle version hoping to learn as I was travelling. However the book keeps referring to the CD e.g. "Listen carefully to the audio material to hear the differences in length of consonants in the pairs listed below". This is infuriating when you don't have access to the audio material.

It is not clear that when you buy the Kindle version you do not have access to the audio material. This was an expensive mistake.
