4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Course, 1 Mar 2001
By A Customer
Chinese is a hard language to learn for the beginner. But once you get over the basic hurdle of pronciation speaking becomes very easy. This set teaches characters and speaking at the smae pace - characters are hard all the time, but it'll always be like that.

Although slightly out of date (some terms refer to comrade or communes!!!) it is an excellent series if you are prepared to put in some hard work - Chinese will never be easy if you learn it fully!!! This series is particuraly good for rigorously and enjoyably teacing proper grammer - essential for an English speaker.

Expect to spend about 10 hours a week on studying, that means you will complete about 1 chapter per week, and on completion of the book will know 600 characters, have an excellent grip on the language, and will be able to communicate about most things, you will certaily be able to speak on a reasonable basis with a native speaker.

Remember Chinese is not an easy language to learn, but it's immensly rewarding if you put in the work. It's recommended you find someone in your home town - i'm sure a native Chinese will be glad to help you if you work hard!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice and easy way to learn chinese, 19 Oct 2004
By Pavel Kotyza "just shopping ;o)" (Prague, Czech Rep.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
We are using this book in my language course. As a absolute beginner I have to say this is the coolest book you can get.

Together with audio is it complete turn-key solution for those who want to start with chinese. Only one thing which made me to give 4 stars is that they uses so much communists term (OK, this book is not new so I do respect).

I do recommend to start with a teacher not self-studying. You have to get over the pronunciation, radicals etc...and advice from exeprienced teacher is only a plus.

So if you are looking for nice and easy to start complete book and audio. Here it is!!!!

Enjoy

5.0 out of 5 stars good but you have to get the extra character-book, 19 Jul 2009
By Richard Almasi "TheHunn" (Europa) - See all my reviews

This book is all in pinyin, but it has two companion script-books to accompany it and as a package it is very effective.

This book has all the exercises and grammar explanations.
There are 17 chapters, each takes about one week to complete.
The grammar is well explained and the exercises are very effective and include: translation, grammar, expansion drills...

There are two companion script-books: one teaches simplified Mandarin script, the other traditional script.
There are pros and cons with both: the simplified is easier to learn and is likely to be the one most used in the future in China, but the traditional one is used in Hong Kong, Taiwan and in older PRC-books.
For practical purposes though (business, travel...) the simplified is probably best to learn.
Their links are: Character text for Colloquial Chinese, "Character Text for Colloquial Chinese" full-form character version prepared by Ping-Cheng T'ung.
The books will teach you both the individual meanings of each character as well as compound-words (words formed by individual symbols).

The intended idea is that you first complete the Colloquial book and then go through one of the character books.
But the chapters in the character-books match the content of what the Colloquial books covers, so you could do one chapter in the Colloquial-book and then do the corresponding chapter in the character-book, and work your way forward that way. Used together both books will take about a year to complete.

This method is very good because the Colloquial book is all in pinyin, and not script, which is better when learning grammar and learning how to speak Chinese.
The character-books are completely in script, the readings have no pinyin or translation, so they will force you to learn how to read Chinese very fast. The character books are just for getting you to read the script and does not cover any extra grammar and has no exercises besides reading.

Since the first book teaches you how to speak Chinese and the second book(s) how to read and write Chinese, you get a complete package.

The whole package is equal to a one-year course at Uni.
