Book Description

7 Jun 1999 0002200120 978-0002200127 illustrated edition

The only photographic field guide you can use in the wild

Identifying mushrooms correctly is vital – eat the wrong species and you could be dead. Mushrooms vary dramatically in shape and colour depending on their age, making them even harder to identify.

By combining the most comprehensive collection of photographs with clear, easy to understand text (with the most important features highlighted in italic), this new guide to mushrooms gives you everything you need to positively identify what you are about to eat.

The book covers every common species of mushrooms, over 1,000 species, and is the most comprehensive photographic guide on mushrooms ever published. If you want to find chanterelles, or ceps, this book is a must.

4.0 out of 5 stars Indispensible guide to Mushrooms 9 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Having just moved back to the country after many years as a "townie" and inheriting a large garden full of wildlife and plantlife, the Collins Wildlife Trust Guides are excellent. In particular this one covering Mushrooms of Britain & Europe.

The book has photographs, not drawings of the subject, which I find makes for easier identification. There's also a comprehensive key section to narrow down species identification. Also contained is a glossary of terminology and an index with tick boxes for the "spotters" of this world.

This book is for the more serious mushroom hunter and it can be a bit long winded to find a specimen in its 904 pages, but the information on indentification, habitat and distribution are second to none. One criticism I would level is that there is no blatant identifier for poisonous or safe to eat mushrooms in the text with each species. Having a garden full of fungi is great. It would be even better if I knew which of the more obscure I could eat !!

4.0 out of 5 stars A perfect field guide, if only... 24 Mar 2001
By beniamin nicolae v. pintea - Published on Amazon.com
This book is, judging by content and structure, the European twin of "National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms" by Gary A. Lincoff, Gary H. Lincoff. It is very exhaustive and easy to use, has excellent description and photos. It also came with a vinyl jacket, a very useful thing for a field guide. I took away one star because it does not state the edibility of each species, a crucial feature of every mushroom guide for mushroom hunters. Comments about edibility are sparse and sometimes refers to vague groups of species. If the author considers this for the future editions (mine was published in 1999), this will make the perfect field guide of European mushrooms.
