5.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy any other! 19 Feb 2006
If you wan a Spanish dictionary don't look any further. Seriously, don't. This is a fantastic dictionary.
Each word is given with its full meanings, and put into context for easier understanding. Some words which have lots of uses have huge sections with plenty of examples so you don't get confused. Some commonly mixed up words, like 'por' and 'para' have an explanation of when each should be used.
Loads of usage examples, very accurate, and almost every word you could think of. I've said it once, but I'll say it again - don't buy any other Spanish dictionary. It's the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Spanish English dictionary there is 9 Oct 2006
If you are looking for a comprehensive Spanish English dictionary then this is the one to go for. Its a weighty tome, so definitely not one for the schoolbag, but it really has got everything.

If you want to test a dictionary just try looking up some idioms, some new phrases, and some swearwords. This one passes on all three. It explains words so well that I've found myself spending half an hour just reading its notes on Spanish words.

Its miles better than the Oxford Dictionary, which is really only any good for American English.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Contemporary Spanish Dictionary available 18 Dec 2004
I used this book for two years whilst learning Spanish and found it invaluable. Although other books may perhaps have a larger number of words, I haven't used another dictionary that comes close to this for the contemporary Spanish that people actually speak and use. It includes the less grammatical and more frequent expressions that confuse foreigners. This is to be contrasted with (for example) the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy which, whilst clearly the last word on 'correct' Spanish, often fails to keep up with a constantly evolving modern language.

Without doubt the Collins Spanish Dictionary is a reasonably-priced, thorough and well-edited dictionary.

However, linguists who are looking for a dictionary focused on European / Castillian Spanish are likely to be disappointed by its heavy emphasis on Latin American Spanish and its lack of European Spanish coverage. In this respect, the Larousse unabridged dictionary is a much better choice Larousse Unabridged Dictionary: Spanish-English / English-Spanish (Larousse Diccionario/Dictionary (English-Spanish/Espanol-Ingles)).

5.0 out of 5 stars It's the best so buy it... 19 Feb 2009
I received this book, a weighty tome, yesterday. Since then I have used it as a translation aid and memory jogger and, in conjunction with the dictionary of Spanish synonyms/antonyms, it has already become invaluable. It is the best Spanish dictionary I have seen and possibly the easiest to use.
If you need a Spanish/English dictionary buy it today...

By Sue B.
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is a great dictionary for someone learning the language, it contains every possible use of all words, including colloquials. It is very large and would benefit from indentations or coloured markings on the sides of the pages indicating where the alphabetic changes occur to speed up searching.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent but electronic version delayed 28 July 2009
The standard of this dictionary is excellent, as expected from Collins.

However I bought this product specifically because of the accompanying electronic version, only to find that this is not yet released. The web site promises that it will be available "by July 2009", but as of 28 July still no change. I trust it will be in place ready for the coming term.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, Up to date reference work 9 Aug 2009
Having decided that I will be studying Spanish at university it made sense to take the plunge and buy this item. Having previously used the Collins Gem and then later the Collins Spanish dictionary and Grammer it made sense to move to the 'Big Brother product'

The pages in the dictionary are easy to use and well laid out. The central section in particular is an absolute God-send as it provides examples of Spanish in everyday use (writing letters of complaint, telephone calls etc.). The basic dictionary is exhaustive providing examples of words even an advanced user of the language is unlikely to need.

The dictionary is expensive but it is a worthwhile investment that you will not regret!
