Review

Revised and updated to cover all the latest vocabulary. This 6th edition of the market leader draws once again on Collins' and Le Robert's unique multi-million word databases of contemporary English and French to ensure the user has the most complete and accurate picture of real language available today.

From the Publisher

Acclaimed for its comprehensive vocabulary coverage, Collins' top-of-the-range French dictionary is the most authoritative and reliable French dictionary on the market. Drawing on the vast resources of Collins' multi-million-word language databanks, it provides the user with an incomparably accurate, up-to-date picture of how real French is used today.

While the specialised nature of some of the entries ensures that it will be the dictionary of choice for academics, university and higher level students, and language professionals, there is much which any language learner will find accessible. The clear typography and uncluttered layout, for example, and the highlighted keyword features, provide the most user-friendly aid to translation possible. There is also help available for typical translation problems and detailed information about France and the French-speaking world in the form of extended cultural entries.

Complex entries amd common lexical structures have been given in-depth treatment with special layouts, and pronunciation is clearly shown for both languages.

The Language In Use section shows hundreds of contemporary examples of how everyday French is used. It includes guidance on essay-writing and correspondence, and gives help in expressing yourself in a wide variety of situations, with categories such as "Likes, Dislikes and Preferences", "Comparisons" and "Obligation".

The combination of the French dictionary and the Language In Use supplement provides such a complete tool for language learning that satisfaction is guaranteed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but VERY big! 22 Jan 2007

This is an excellent dictionary.

Very comprehensive, and the font, colour scheme & general presentation make it easy to find the word or expression you are looking for, and are attractive.

One warning though - this is a VERY large book; check the dimensions shown in the description before ordering! It will take up a large space on your shelf and will probably be too large to carry to & from college or on your travels. You may need a pocket dictionary as well, or go for the concise version of this one (which appears to be an excellent dictionary too).

This dictionary is the finest French dictionary so far. The vocabulary is up-to-date, there are lots of examples and the font is eye-friendly. French is my third language, Polish being the first, but I still look into this dictionary for English translations rather that search French-Polish-French dictionaries because Collins is more thorough. Compared to Oxford Hachette which I also have this one is far better in grasping the modern French and I definitely choose Collins over Oxford, or any other FR-En dictionary for that matter

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING! 8 Sep 2007

Format:Hardcover
I am doing A Level French, and this dictionary was recommended to me at the beginning of my AS Level course.
The dictionary is very comprehensive, and excellently laid out. When looking up words, they are often placed in common phrases, which makes it very easy to use. I find that the essay phrases which divide the french-english from the english-french sections are paricularly useful in helping me to raise the level of my language.
Having used this book often during the past year, I can find no faults, and am sure it will be of great use to me in the future.
