As a student learning the French language and struggling with the usual French Dictionaries this book certainly helped me to expand my learning skills not only on paper but verbally as well. The Collins-Robert is broken down into catagories per word giving you not only the translation but also different options for certain ways of expressing a sentence. Since buying this book it has become my bestfriend and my homework has certainly improved.

This is the best dictionary I have ever used. It completely avoids the usual traps of translation by giving each word in context and includes many useful day-to-day expressions. The only down side is its size.

On the first day of the Upper Sixth, my entire French set was ordered to have one of these dictionaries by the next week. I ordered it off Amazon.co.uk and it came in no time and I use it all the time.
Anything you want to look up is in here, plus it's got the languages the right way 'round (there was one edition, I believe, where English-> French came first, but this one is the "right" way 'round).
Couple of slight drawbacks - the sheer volume of words leads to a massive size, which puts you off using it, but when you find that , yet again, the internet fails to return your search, you pick up the book and find it in an instant. It also gives you compounds which include the peculiarities of the French language, ever helpful!

English speaking ex-pats bible
It may be expensive but I would thoroughly recommend this dictionary as the No.1 choice for ex-pats living in France (or wishing to live in France) and learning French.
