Product Description

Product Description

Commemorating 75 years of the Ramblers, Britain's biggest charity working to promote walking and improve conditions for all walkers, this beautiful hardback book features 75 of Britain's best walks: one for each year the organisation has been in existence with each walk selected by, and a favourite of, the Ramblers.

This beautiful book is packed with colour photographs and maps featuring the best 75 walks to be found in Britain as chosen by the Ramblers. Each walk has a special meaning;: sometimes a local group has worked hard to improve access for walkers along the route, at other times it might be that the views along the way are exceptional. The walks vary in length and dificulty to allow for all abilities.

• Endorsed by the Ramblers who celebrate their 75th anniversary in 2010.

• 75 fantastic walks, one for each year that the Ramblers has been in existence.

• Each has detailed Ordnance Survey cartography showing the routes plus stunning colour photographs.

• All the areas chosen by the Ramblers; all with significance to the association throughout its long history.

• The routes include interesting facts about the areas chosen; only the most significant and the best walking areas have been included.

• Includes information on the history of the Ramblers with a timeline outlining key events along the way.

BORDERLINE USEFUL 4 Nov 2010

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Unless you normally take a 'suitcase' with your gear in when walking then you will find this book far to big to take on a tramp.. A large glossy tome of some 11" x 9.5" x 1.1" and weighing several pounds it really is only of use in giving you some idea of where to walk and it's not too great at that.

The good points, each suggested area eg Cornwall gets a large colour photo with some text covering highlights of the proposed trail and a few generalities about, in this case Cornwall, turn over page and you are given directions for the ramble. An OS map takes up a small part of the page and the are some details such as distance of walk, terrain etc. as well as the number of the relevant OS map. On the same page you are given details of the walk split alpha numeric. The alpha gives the directions to follow and the numeric something to look for/at e.g. Maenporth is a sheltered, popular beach with safe swimming......excellent but why squeeze it all onto one page? The opposite page contains just a large colour photo; no, to me to be walkers book this should have been less than half the size and I certainly don't need lots of glossy photos to fill my rucksack with.

Fine for coffee tables and perhaps giving ideas but pretty useless in practice.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Stunningly put together book - featuring beautiful photography, detailed topographical maps and an alternative selection of the best walks in Britain. All 75 walks are described clearly and colourfully, and the author really sells the scenery, helping the reader to visualise each walk. I got the impression my mum was really chuffed to receive this and it now has pride of place on her bookshelf.

However, a pocket guide this is not. 'Ramblers Best Walks Britain' is more of a coffee table book because it is too large and heavy to take with you on a walk. I think it is better suited to providing inspiration. Or of course you could be old fashioned and take a photocopy! Surely thats the British thing to do!

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
"Ramblers Best Walks Britain: 75 of Britain's Best Walks" makes for a nice celebration of 75 years of the Ramblers' Association of Britain. As a coffee table book, to browse through on long winter evenings, it is all that it needs to be -- 280+ pages, offering a mix of informative and descriptive text, maps and full-page colour photographs. With one or two walks for just about every county of Britain (but not Northern Ireland, note) you can guarantee that at least one of the rambles in this book should be near to your home, or your favourite stamping grounds. And, you never know, it may also serve to lure you into areas you have never visited, or considered visiting before.

Unfortunately, its large and heavy format means that the book is all but useless out in the field, or up on the fells -- there is no way anyone would want to take this with them, tucked into a rucksack, or under the arm. It is far too heavy and bulky and is unlikely to benefit from exposure to any inclement weather conditions. Nor, with only 75 walks in total, does it offer anything other than a sampling of the rambling opportunities that any area may have to cover, giving the reader nothing more than a taste of the delights that the British countryside has in store.

As a book to read, sitting by the fire, glass in hand, and imagination free to roam, this book is sure to delight any who love to be out and about, looking at new things and new places, at those times when they are unable to be off doing it for real. As a guide to actually doing it, though, it is sorely flawed. But if it encourages a few more people to see more of the countryside for themselves, it could well be deemed a good thing.
