More About the Author

Born in Oxford in 1948, Jonathan was brought up in rural Yorkshire and later in mid-Wales. He inherited a love of the countryside from his father, a land agent, and spent several years lecturing in agricultural education after training as a farm manager. He went on to establish his own small business renovating period houses, indulging his passion for old structures in very much a hands-on capacity.

Jonathan has researched and written the Nicholson Waterways Guides for over 20 years - and more recently The Times Waterways of Britain - having developed a fascination for Britain's inland waterways while teaching. He currently lives on a 60ft narrowboat, moored on the Forth & Clyde Canal, near Glasgow.

Product Description

Review

"Taste in guide books can be a very personal thing, but few serious boaters will venture out without a Nicholson's Guide. There is a wealth of information that even the most experienced cannot hope to keep abreast of, and the guides are welcome valuable for cyclists and walkers too." The Inland Waterways Association.

I bought this book before this year's trip on the Kenneth and Avon canal. Contains all the information which a boater needs to be able to plan and travel on the canal. This includes location of locks, winding holes, pump out locations etc. It also contains useful information about things to see on the way, villages, pubs, and places. Excellent book if you want the hard facts

Collins Waterways Guide 7 is the second of their waterways guides I have bought, and in my oppinion they are invaluable when you are on a narrow boat holiday. They are full of usfull information, i.e. where to find restaurants, shops, PUBS, boat yards, morrings, PUBS, marinas, PUBS; you get the point. you also get lots of info on the areas you pass through, points of interest, navigational addvice, walking and cycling, history, nearby towns and citys. Even if you arn't on a boating holiday, the books make an interesting read, and I could spend hours just looking at the maps alone.
The first book I bought was for our first ever narrow boat holliday on the Shropshire Union and Llangollen canalls; without it we would have been totaly lost. For anybody contemplating a boating holiday I say, get the appropriate book for the holiday you are thinking of; it will fire you up. Brilliant!!!

Up to usual high standards although the recesion and rapidly declining number of pubs will render it increasingly vulnerable to error as soon as it's published, sadly. For canal users this remains a 'must have', however.

This is the second of these guides I have bought. They are very useful for cyclists and walkers as well as boaters as they clearly show the towpath, crossings, and pubs. (always essential on a long ride or walk).

The guide is really excellent as a waterway guide. However I would point out that a high number of the people purchasing this particular guide are those involved in the Devizes to Westminster kayak marathon. As such if the guide was to be reissued I would suggest that a little more info is provided for those following in car, bike. There are good roadmaps included but unfortunately they just go off the page as you try and move from lock to lock.
