Review

"Taste in guide books can be a very personal thing, but few serious boaters will venture out without a Nicholson's Guide. There is a wealth of information that even the most experienced cannot hope to keep abreast of, and the guides are welcome valuable for cyclists and walkers too." The Inland Waterways Association.

Product Description

Popular guide covering the canals and waterways between Exeter and the River Thames. Colour Ordnance Survey® maps clearly show locks, towpaths and boating facilities. There are also comprehensive navigational notes as well as descriptions of the towns and villages, pubs and restaurants alongside the waterways.

In print for over 30 years, the Collins/Nicholson guides to the waterways have always been a vital part of journeys along Britain’s canals and rivers. They are designed for anyone and everyone with an interest in Britain’s inland waterways – from experienced boaters to those planning their first boat trip, as well as walkers, cyclists and visitors.

The Ordnance Survey ® Maps have added information showing:
• Locks, bridges, tunnels, aqueducts, winding holes and towpaths.
• Waterpoints, sanitary stations, pump out facilities and refuse disposal.
• Boatyards, pubs, restaurants and local shops.
• Mile markers and milestones (distance in miles and number of locks to strategic points along the waterways).

Text includes:
• The history and background to each canal.
• Local services and places of interest, pubs and restaurants and NEW for this edition: postcodes added for each place.
• Opportunities for walking and cycling.
• NEW for this edition: notes on wildlife to be found along the waterways.

Comprehensive navigational notes include:
• Maximum dimensions and low bridges.

Collins Waterways Guide 7 is the second of their waterways guides I have bought, and in my oppinion they are invaluable when you are on a narrow boat holiday. They are full of usfull information, i.e. where to find restaurants, shops, PUBS, boat yards, morrings, PUBS, marinas, PUBS; you get the point. you also get lots of info on the areas you pass through, points of interest, navigational addvice, walking and cycling, history, nearby towns and citys. Even if you arn't on a boating holiday, the books make an interesting read, and I could spend hours just looking at the maps alone.
The first book I bought was for our first ever narrow boat holliday on the Shropshire Union and Llangollen canalls; without it we would have been totaly lost. For anybody contemplating a boating holiday I say, get the appropriate book for the holiday you are thinking of; it will fire you up. Brilliant!!!

I bought this book before this year's trip on the Kenneth and Avon canal. Contains all the information which a boater needs to be able to plan and travel on the canal. This includes location of locks, winding holes, pump out locations etc. It also contains useful information about things to see on the way, villages, pubs, and places. Excellent book if you want the hard facts

2009 Edition 6 Oct 2009
Format:Spiral-bound
Up to usual high standards although the recesion and rapidly declining number of pubs will render it increasingly vulnerable to error as soon as it's published, sadly. For canal users this remains a 'must have', however.

Afloat on the canals
Not as impressed with this 'new' edition. Much prefer our 16 year old version, but this is becoming unrepairable after so many years. Read more
