Review

"Taste in guide books can be a very personal thing, but few serious boaters will venture out without a Nicholson's Guide. There is a wealth of information that even the most experienced cannot hope to keep abreast of, and the guides are welcome valuable for cyclists and walkers too." The Inland Waterways Association.

If you've not seen the original 1986 version, then you'll think its not a bad book. If you have seen the original 1986 version you will be disappointed by the scale of the maps (based on 1:50,000 maps rather than the larger scale OS maps).

Disappointed boater 19 May 2012

As an enthusiastic boater on the Inland Waterways for 20 years I always rated the Nicholson guides highest in terms of overall usefulness. The depiction of the waterway was clear and accompanied by a narative description of the route. Each town or village was briefly decribed together with places of interest and other usefull features such as pubs, shops and post office were marked making itinerary planning simple. Distances were given to enable cruising times to be estimated.

I was horrified to find that the Broads Guide conformed to none of these ideals. Although the maps are derived from the popular OS series overprinting has eliminated much of the content. Pubs and shops are not indicated and the only distance finder given appears to be in conflict with itself.

I shall be looking for an alternative guide.
