Review

"Taste in guide books can be a very personal thing, but few serious boaters will venture out without a Nicholson's Guide. There is a wealth of information that even the most experienced cannot hope to keep abreast of, and the guides are welcome valuable for cyclists and walkers too." The Inland Waterways Association.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but could be better 15 Sep 2009
Format:Spiral-bound|Amazon Verified Purchase
These guides have improved vastly from the Nicholson guides I originally bought in the late 70's/ early 80's. Colour OS maps help information to stand out clearly and the spiral binding means the pages you want stay open on the barge roof (wind permitting) when you are navigating (very helpful on junctions or other places where decisions are required - and not just how much ketchup you want on your bacon butty). There are a couple of things they could be more helpful on though. Firstly, pub/ restaurant/ shops are mentioned, but a note as to which bridge is most convenient or safest to moor would be good. Similarly, notes on general safe/ secure/ legal overnight moorings, particularly in built up areas would be useful. Boatyards where overnight moorings are possible are mentioned, which is particularly useful in Birmingham and the Black Country, but for those who don't want to be in a boatyard, guidance on other locations would be a big 'plus'.

4.0 out of 5 stars DETAILED AND COMPREHENSIVE 18 Oct 2009
By Steve S
Format:Spiral-bound
Well-known Nicholson Guide format with good level of detail. Good price too from Amazon! Some useful navigational notes included though in my view, this series of guides doesn't always sufficiently highlight "problem" areas such as areas to avoid mooring owing to vandalism etc.

Good clear maps and the spiral binding is a big plus. Plenty of info but be cautious if you are told that supplies are accessible from the canal - that can mean 2 miles!!
