A superb guide 26 Jan 2003
By Essame
This guide follows the same format as the companion Garden Birds of Britain & Europe, but is altogether the better purchase. It represents better value and illustrates three times the number of species - the only penalty - it weighs slightly more.
Enclosed in a plastic slip-on cover for protection, it uses excellent quality photos to aid identification, plus a brief description, and note on habitat, food and breeding.
Last year I had a clear view of an unknown species on waste ground. None of my bird books owned at the time helped me to identify it. Months of frustration passed, until I found this guide. I bought it because we already have the excellent Garden Birds version, and could see that this was even better. A thorough search through the illustrations revealed a clear photo of a Wheatear - identification solved as last.

I needed a pocket guide that I could take on holiday and this fitted the bill and my pocket exactly!! Yes it is limited to one image per bird, not ideal if you want to check if you have just spotted a female scaup! But it's a pocket guide. I have the paperback of Collins Bird Guide, amongst others and I keep these at home for reference.

Still this was a great price for this book.

Outdated but useful 22 July 2009
By MikeCan
This book is now 15+ years old, but is still a good beginner's guide to birding in Europe. It is definitely a 'pocket guide' - a small format to slip into your coat pocket. The downside of this is the small print and minute distribution maps.
Identification is by photographs, rather than fine drawings. These are of varying quality, but are adequate.
Given the price, this is a bargain for beginners, though the experienced birder will want something more substantial.
