A silver brumby is special, but he will be hunted by man and horse alike, and must be stronger than both.

Thowra, the magnificent silver stallion, is king of the brumbies. But he must defend his herd from the mighty horse, The Brolga, in the most savage of struggles.

Product Description

From the Back Cover

A silver brumpy is a most special horse, both to other horses and in the land of men. And it is men who will always seek to catch him, for his beauty.

Thowra, the magnificent silver stallion, longs to be King of the Brumbies like the mighty horse called The Brogla. But Thowra is young, and to defeat The Brolga he needs all his strength and cunning. So he bides his time, and listens, and learns. Soon he knows that even if he defeats The Brolga he must face and overcome something much worse: the danger from man . . .

About the Author

Born in 1913, Elyne Mitchell began writing for her children. Although The Silver Brumby books are her most famous, she wrote several others, mainly about horses. Passionate about the dramatic landscapes of the Australian Alps, her books convey the beauty and savagery of that area with a remarkable lyricism.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Silver Brumby Series 23 Jan 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
The first time I heard the name Thowra I would guess I was little more than 4 and so lucky to have a sister that wanted to share this book with me. How wondrous, how completely enchanting is the setting, the writing drawing you in introducing you to a completely new world. The images, the sounds, sights all beautifully captured and captivating. Each page read a little faster, each day bringing yet more adventures to our new found friends, the Brumbies. How graceful, elegant, how free they were. Thowra and Storm two newborn foals born into the wild of Bel Bel and Miri sons of proud sire Yarowman. Friends always, brothers together they played unaware that this would all too soon be a very different world for them. Heartrending, heartbreaking and yet so very heartwarming. Thowra the silver brumby with golden main and tail, the pride of his mother, the envy of his own kind, the target of man and his need to possess that which neither should or could ever be tamed.
This book and the following series will stay in my heart always. It was one of the first books I ever truely enjoyed and to this day still do. It truely is a wonder.
The whole series was re-issued by Diamond Books of London in 1993 In 2 issues.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the first book of a wonderful series 16 Oct 2001
Format:Paperback
I first read this book when I was 10 years old and totally fell in love with it. I am now in my twenties and have recently read it again and still loved it. I especially enjoyed the descriptions of the Australian countryside and native wildlife. I totally agree with the other readers comments that the books following this one should be published again. I would love to own the whole set and to be able to share these wonderful and exciting stories with my own children in the future.

So if anyone wants to sell there copies of the other books please let me know. Publishers please reprint them!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Silver brumby 9 April 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I first read this book when I was about 8 years old, and continued to read it over and over again throughout my early teens. I was totally enchanted by Thowra's world and that of the Australian terrain. Mitchell writes with such enthusiasm and detail that you can't help but be sucked into the life of the brumbies and the trials they face daily. I agree with the other readers that this whole series should be published again - I would love to own the whole range and hopefully introduce Thowra and his herd to my family. Brilliant read, enchanting story and thoroughly wonderful book, a must have !

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read 27 May 2003
Format:Paperback
I found this book in a dingy old charity shop. Feeling bored one day I took the time to read it. It is the best book I have ever read. I have read this book countless times and I am still happy to take a day to read it again. It is pure magic, my copy is getting a bit tatty now, but it is still a brilliant book in all respects!

5.0 out of 5 stars Silver Brumby IS the best 11 Oct 2004
Format:Hardcover
One of the best books/series I ever read. Taught me a lot about australian wildlife and made me want to BE a horse, never mind ride one.
Written in an adult but not patronising way, as well as being the life story of a horse and tale of wonder it talks about death and humans and fighting and living as a brumby.
Let your children read it please.

The silver brumby is an original story about horses, it dose not base it’s account on people as so many others do but on the life of a young colt trying to survive in the bush. Being born different at birth, other stallion fear and hate him, men lured by his beauty try to capture him, but thowa is no ordinary horse some say that his mother cast some bush magic on him when his was born. With his half brother storm, you set out on a great journey through the Australian Blue Mountains
