Meticulously complied by two crossword professionals with a combined thirty years in the field, and based on a massive analysis of current crosswords, there has never been a crossword dictionary with the breadth, depth, and currency of this one. From Homer Simpson to Homer's Iliad, the wide-ranging entries include 500,000+ synonyms, 3,000+ literary works, 5,000+ films, 20,000+ famous people from all fields, and more than 100,000 fill-in-the-blank clues so popular in today's crosswords.

4.0 out of 5 stars Never at a Loss for Words(but not quite), 16 Aug 2006
By Born Again Cruciverbalist "Geoff" (Stockport, Cheshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This book is a superb aid for cruciverbalists. When you can't solve a crossword clue, just look up one or more of the words contained in the clue to find synonyms or related words, all listed by word length. However, it's more of a thesaurus than a dictionary - there are no definitions of the words.

One small drawback is that it was compiled by two American crossword compilers so it does not have some British English words you might hope to find. The Collins version is Anglicised so it lists both US and UK spellings of color, labor, center, etc. It lists counties for England and Ireland (but not Wales or Scotland) as well as the US States. There's a list of US Presidents but not British Prime Ministers.

I tried it out on the Financial Times Polymath crossword and found it useful but not as fast as using Google. There were some odd deficiencies, e.g., the word gout is not listed. I looked for mangetout--missing, as was its synonym, sugar pea. Okra was listed but not its synonym Ladies Fingers.

It's also quite a large heavy book, 1178 pages. The print is rather small but legible.

Despite these drawbacks, it's a superb crossword dictionary.
