Product Description

Product Description

This is a new title in Collins' recently relaunched best-selling Learn to Paint series, providing a clear and simple introduction to an exciting style of painting that is attracting more and more interest among amateur artists.

Many leisure painters are interested in painting simple abstracts but are not sure quite how to approach this way of working. In this book Laura Reiter provides a clear and accessible introduction to this contemporary style of painting, explaining in simple, straightforward terms what abstract art is and how various techniques can be used to paint popular subjects in a less representational way.

Early sections look at mark-making techniques, aspects of design and composition, and methods for creating texture and using collage. Laura then explains several simple ways of approaching an abstract painting, using watercolour, acrylics, pastels and collage:

• abstracting from simple doodles
• developing natural forms in an abstract way
• altering shapes
• creating stylized images
• using sections of a drawing
• responding to different emotions

Practical exercises, useful tips and several step-by-step demonstrations are included and the book is illustrated with Laura’s very colourful and exciting abstract paintings.

She regularly runs courses and workshops in abstract art, and her paintings have been shown in numerous exhibitions. She has been awarded several prizes for her work, and most recently was a prizewinner at the prestigious Bankside Gallery, London, at the Royal Watercolour Society’s open exhibition. This is her first book.

Small but loaded 27 Sep 2006
Format:Paperback
Though small in size, every page on this book is full of useful tips, ideas and inspiration! In its first part, the book explores colors, textures, elements of design and composition, then it proceeds to show various ways in which you can create an abstract, all written in a clear language and accompanied by drawings and pictures at every step to clarify it. You could work on the tips in this book for at least one whole year! A gem. I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in exploring abstract painting.

Small but excellent 17 Nov 2006

I bought this book as I had always struggled with abstract painting and thought it may help free up my style. It certainly did that as it's full of interesting tips and ideas that proved to bee very helpful. My only minor criticism would be that its to focused on water based paint. Some examples of acrylics or oils would have been useful.

However, I would recommend this book as it's worth the money.

The cover shows a beautiful abstract painting - but the contents are very disappointing. The artwork shown is very basic and I am so unhappy that I am returning it. I can't imagine who is going to learn much about creating abstract art from this book!
