5.0 out of 5 stars Dictionary and much more 28 Nov 2008
By Sean
This is an reasonably priced all-in-one Latin dictionary for both study and reference alike. Beginners and those already proficient in the Latin tongue will find this book both equally useful.

It is actually much more than a dictionary: included is a thorough section on grammar at the back (complete with Verb tables). This supplements a quick reference grammar section at the very start of the book which provides easy access to those tables of the various declensions and conjugations. Also included are brief sections on the alphabet and orthography.

The actual dictionary includes both Latin-English and English-Latin. Verbs are listed in bold as the present indicative and infinitive; Nouns as the nominative and genitive singular. Lozenges, Italics and brackets separate the differing uses of the word (abbreviations are provided at the front). Macrons are provided for long and short vowels. The dictionary doesn't provide pronunciations for the individual words but a guide is provided at the front which should make the pronunciation of Latin fairly clear for all. All in all it is easy to use and well presented.

We also get a section on Roman life and culture including a list of key historical dates, Republican government, organisation of the imperial army and a Roman family tree. It is far too brief to be of use to a serious student of history; in truth it is merely padding, but due to its easy access it is handy to dip into from time to time. Far more useful is a list of Roman geographical names and sections on numerals, dates and measurements. There is also a handy section on Latin Verse (with examples of the various ancient-meters) and a list of Latin terms used in English. This extra stuff solidifies the dictionary as an affordable multi-purpose desktop reference book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Made homework so much easier 9 Nov 2011
When I first suggested getting my daughter a Latin Dictionary one night after another helpless attempt at homework, she was rather reluctant because she wasn't sure it would be as easy to use as her school text book.
I decided that I'd buy it sho that when she forgot her textbook she wouldn't be left to copying answers the next day. As soon as I gave it to her she took one look at it and said it was even better than her on "syllabus approved" school book.
She now takes it to her lessons and it is using it for GCSE reveision and found not only the English to Latin translation and vice versa usefull, but loves the grammar section.
Her grades have shot up as her understanding of tenses and verbs has finally improved and I can't help but reccommend this book to anyone who finds the school text book just isnn't enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, comprehensive, and clear! 7 Jun 2012
Verified Purchase
I am studying for a PhD in Medieval History and have to translate difficult Latin texts. I own and use a variety of dictionaries, and bought this to trial as a replacement for the excellent (but bulky and verbose) Chambers-Murray Latin dictionary. I must say I thought that the Collins dictionary - being much smaller - might be found wanting when it came to vocabulary, but instead it is excellent! The Collins dictionary and grammar is an invaluable tool, not only because it has a full grammar at the back, and a brilliant quick reference grammar at the front (goodbye to carrying around Kennedy's Revised Latin Primer!), but also because it is a pleasure to use: the typeface and layout is a model of clarity, and it is easy and fast to find the words you need. It lacks the extremely lengthy notes on usage and where words appear in Caesar or Cicero etc. that are found in old-school Latin dictionaries such as Chambers-Murray and Lewis and Short, but for me (as a medievalist rather than a classicist) this is a bonus because it de-clutters the book and lets you immediately get at the meaning of a word.

On a geeky note, I also particularly like the appearance of the volume itself - it is well-bound, printed on good paper, the font is pleasing, and it has an attractive cover and spine.

In a word - superb! Well done, Collins!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book ever 19 Dec 2010
I have started to learn Latin at an advanced age to help me with English, French and ESOL studies. I have a tutor and am learning with a teenager. This book was a brilliant find and we are using Getting started with Latin by William Linney also from Amazon. Good luck to us!

As always wonderful service.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best buy in Latin dictionaries 4 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase
I've used the Collins Latin dictionary for many years now, so much so that my last copy disintegrated. Apart from a few obscure Latin constructions it is really comprehensive, and it's the best of the routinely available dictionaries. If you need a Latin Dictionary, this is the one to buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for helping with homework 22 Jan 2013

My daughter has just started to study Latin and is finding difficult to grasp. Having not done Latin myself I have been unable to help her with even the basics. After several frustrating evenings struggling with homework I decided to try to find a book to help us. I chose this one based on the reviews I read and I have to say that I am delighted with this purchase. It is good quality, easy to use and a good price. There may be other great books available but we have found this one perfect for our needs
