5.0 out of 5 stars Dictionary and much more, 28 Nov 2008
By
Sean (Northumberland, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Collins Latin Dictionary and Grammar (Paperback)
This is an reasonably priced all-in-one Latin dictionary for both study and reference alike. Beginners and those already proficient in the Latin tongue will find this book both equally useful.

It is actually much more than a dictionary: included is a thorough section on grammar at the back (complete with Verb tables). This supplements a quick reference grammar section at the very start of the book which provides easy access to those tables of the various declensions and conjugations. Also included are brief sections on the alphabet and orthography.

The actual dictionary includes both Latin-English and English-Latin. Verbs are listed in bold as the present indicative and infinitive; Nouns as the nominative and genitive singular. Lozenges, Italics and brackets separate the differing uses of the word (abbreviations are provided at the front). Macrons are provided for long and short vowels. The dictionary doesn't provide pronunciations for the individual words but a guide is provided at the front which should make the pronunciation of Latin fairly clear for all. All in all it is easy to use and well presented.

We also get a section on Roman life and culture including a list of key historical dates, Republican government, organisation of the imperial army and a Roman family tree. It is far too brief to be of use to a serious student of history; in truth it is merely padding, but due to its easy access it is handy to dip into from time to time. Far more useful is a list of Roman geographical names and sections on numerals, dates and measurements. There is also a handy section on Latin Verse (with examples of the various ancient-meters) and a list of Latin terms used in English. This extra stuff solidifies the dictionary as an affordable multi-purpose desktop reference book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book ever, 19 Dec 2010
This review is from: Collins Latin Dictionary and Grammar (Paperback)
I have started to learn Latin at an advanced age to help me with English, French and ESOL studies. I have a tutor and am learning with a teenager. This book was a brilliant find and we are using Getting started with Latin by William Linney also from Amazon. Good luck to us!

As always wonderful service.

5.0 out of 5 stars Made homework so much easier, 9 Nov 2011
This review is from: Collins Latin Dictionary and Grammar (Paperback)
When I first suggested getting my daughter a Latin Dictionary one night after another helpless attempt at homework, she was rather reluctant because she wasn't sure it would be as easy to use as her school text book.
I decided that I'd buy it sho that when she forgot her textbook she wouldn't be left to copying answers the next day. As soon as I gave it to her she took one look at it and said it was even better than her on "syllabus approved" school book.
She now takes it to her lessons and it is using it for GCSE reveision and found not only the English to Latin translation and vice versa usefull, but loves the grammar section.
Her grades have shot up as her understanding of tenses and verbs has finally improved and I can't help but reccommend this book to anyone who finds the school text book just isnn't enough.
