Review

Amazon customer reviews of Collins Gem Phrasebooks:

“They are easily navigable with colour coding for different sections. My favourite bit, though – which I couldn't do without – is the awesome menu reader! They're really discreet for bringing out at the dinner table, pretty much fitting in your hand, and avoiding the truly obvious tourist look!”

“Easy to use, very light to carry and the food dictionary in the middle of the book is a life saver when your waiter doesn't speak english. A must have.”

“Much smaller than the usual Berlitz guides but equally useful.”

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect little book 8 Sep 2011
By deanne
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This pocket size book had all the information I required for a holiday in Germany. I especially liked the breakdown on how to say the word.

5.0 out of 5 stars Used it every day! 31 July 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Smaller and neater than I envisaged (8cms x 10.5cms), this wee book fitted into my handbag with no bother.
I was on holiday in Berlin for a week, and though English is widely spoken there, I used the Menu Reader section every day (knowing what I'm ordering in restaurants is important to me since I'm a veggie!) I also frequently referred to the vocabulary lists (with pronunciation guide beside each word) in the Shopping and Eating Out sections.
The colour coded sections were great for finding relevant pages quickly.
The bit I used the most though, was the dictionary at the back - both German to English and English to German. This takes up more than a third of the book. It's much smaller and more concise than a full-blown dictionary, yet there are enough words in it for everyday use.
The book also contains many other helpful topics like Key Phrases, Polite Expressions, Pronunciation and Asking the Way, and though I didn't personally refer to them during my short stay, it was reassuring to know they were handy!
I give this invaluable wee travelling companion full marks for its compact size, easy layout and useful dictionary.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good reliable little phrase book 26 May 2012
By E. WOOLSTON TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Like most of Collins products, this little phrasebook has a good selection of handy questions and answers, logically laid out and accurate. There is a pronunciation guide with each phrase which includes having the emphasis in bold.
I have an issue that the 'Making Friends' section is all in the informal 'du' form - OK with youngsters getting to know each other but not for the more formal German adult who may well end the friendship the first time you call her 'du' uninvited. It would have been a good idea to provide the questions in both formal and informal style.
It would have been handy, in the 'telling the time' section to explain that the half hour is always half TO the hour (ie halb drei is half-past two). Although 'half-past' examples are given, this can throw English speakers.
Apart from these quibbles I can recommend this. Very handy to have on your Kindle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyday German! 7 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is an extremely useful tool to have if you are stumped for a phrase whilst on holiday/travelling. The phonetics alongside the German word are easy to follow and have corrected some of my bad pronuncitions that I have acquired!

4.0 out of 5 stars it is a phrase book 27 Jan 2012
By lragill
Format:Paperback
beware this book is tiny!
i didn't know it was pocket sized when i got it!
however it is really good, useful and colour co-ordinated, its everything a traveller would need for hotels, food, taxi, airport, etc. i would also suggest a book to accompany it for beginners to German. even though it tells you how to pronounce words it doesn't tell you how to structure full sentences in every section.

This came quickly but was disappointing. It is much too restricted in it's choice of phrases and completely ignores people like us who need to be able to talk about campsites.
