3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource but painfully small 25 Jan 2011

An excellent dictionary but as some other reviewers have mentioned the typecase is very very small. I expected small print but did not realise how difficult it would make it to read the Hangul, especially the black-fonted Hangul examples (as opposed to the blue-fonted Hangul definitions). So be warned you may need a magnifying glass!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful little dictionary. 16 Jan 2011
This is a wonderful little book. A true Gem for a beginning student of Korean (or English, I presume).

I have been learning Korean for a few years now, and this is the first dictionary, in print, or electronic, that I have actually found helpful to my studies. My guess is that a Korean person learning English will find it equally helpful.

Why? Because it is the only simple English/Korean - Korean/English dictionary to use both English and Korean script. All other SIMPLE Korean dictionaries I have seen are rendered almost useless because they use romanized Korean script (making it necessary to learn a third language, romanized Korean). There are also available wonderful, detailed and advanced English/Korean, Korean/English dictionaries, but they are produced by Korean publishers, for Korean users, so one would need to be pretty advanced in Korean before they become useful. The same criticism (too detailed for a beginner, produced for Koreans, not English speakers) also applies to every electronic dictionary that I have seen.

In addition to the two basic dictionaries, the front matter contains an explanation (in English) of how to pronounce Korean words, together with an explanation (in Korean) of how to pronounce English words using the phonetic information in the dictionary. Also in the front matter are tables of (1) Korean and sino-Korean numbers, (2) Korean days of the week and (3) Korean Months.

This book is truly pocket sized. It is produced in a wonderfully clear type-faces (both English and Korean) which are easy to read. I particularly appreciated this last point - in most dictionaries that I have seen, the KOREAN words are printed very small (for native Korean speakers), which makes them hard for me to read.

3.0 out of 5 stars A decent little dictionary 2 Aug 2010
I like this dictionary; the Korean section is in the order of the Korean alphabet (ie not in the order of romanised Korean words, as is the Berlitz dictionary) which is very helpful indeed, and it is also nicely laid out and seems quite authoritative. BUT it's really really tiny! In fact, it's so tiny I have real difficulty in reading it - I have to concentrate extremely hard on focussing, or use a magnifying glass. 20-year-olds can probably read it easily, but middle-aged people like me will struggle with it. Also, although this is a minor point, the cover is very flimsy; I would have appreciated thicker card or plastic. However, if you want a decent Korean dictionary the size of a cigarette packet, this is pretty well perfect.

4.0 out of 5 stars Satisfactory 20 Jun 2013

Met expectations. Very small, but still able to read (but then again I'm young, and not long-sighted or anything). Good quality, easy to use, would definitely recommend.

When I was looking into buying this dictionary and reading the other reviews about the product on here, I noticed that many of the reviews mentioned this dictionary's small size. They are not kidding. This thing is tiny (the product description states the dimensions as being 11 x 7.6 x 2.2cm - I didn't notice that they were listed until now). Whilst this is perfect for me, as I am about to move to Korea and have a pathetic 23kg luggage allowance to pack my whole life into, some people, especially those with not-so-perfect vision might struggle, as the text has been scaled down to boot. I feel very fortunate to have just been issued with a stronger prescription for my glasses.

Some positives of this dictionary is that it is two-way between Korean and English and vice-versa, and uses both hangul Korean and revised romanization. Though anybody who wishes to learn Korean should primarily focus on learning hangul, I find that, as a more visual learner, having this supplemented with Korean romanization really helps me to commit new words to memory. There are still a lot of Korean learning resources that continue to use the old form of Korean romanization which I am completely unfamiliar with, so the fact that this dictionary uses revised romanization is a big plus for me.

It's a nice little touch that at the beginning of this dictionary there are hints on both Korean and English pronunciation - I doubt anybody would be able to learn pronunciation of either language from this alone, but it's good as a reminder. Along with this, there are also basic two-way lists with numbers (both native and sino-Korean), days of the week and months.

As other reviewers have touched upon, this dictionary isn't really suited to anybody above the beginner level.
