Even the sharpest birders will admit that as a family the warblers set identification challenges, and this is the first attempt to group most of those found in the Britain and Europe together as sound reference on CD. This set of 3 disks includes about 300 recordings of 65 species or races and is accompanied by a book which gives additional information and identification tips. Geoff Sample has augmented his own recordings with others from various sources, and are of good quality. Each species is introduced by Geoff, and he narrates some very useful comparisons at the end of each species.
A lot of racial splitting has occurred in the warbler family in recent years so a useful aspect of these recordings is the inclusion of different splits such as Western/Eastern forms of Bonelli's, Orphean, Olivaceous and Subalpine Warblers, together with Chiffchaffs of our own UK form together with Siberian and Iberian forms. Also of interest are the recordings of Green, Greenish and Two-barred Greenish forms of what most people now lump together as Greenish Warbler.
Also of great use are the call notes of Yellow-browed, Hume's Leaf, Dusky and Radde's Warblers - which are usually left out of other CDs. The songs of these four have not been included (they don't breed in Europe), but if they were included in a future revision I think many birders who venture into Asia would be appreciative.
For completeness both Goldcrest and Firecrest have been included in this set (as part of the Sylviidae), yet Mountain Chiffchaff (found in Turkey) and the recently-split African Desert Warbler (found between Morocco and Tunisia) are not - despite recordings of the latter two being available. Of course, neither are truly European, but then neither are Tristram's or Arabian Warblers - both of which are given the full treatment.
