Book Description

4 Mar 2002 Collins Field Guide

From Grand Bahama Island in the north to Grenada in the south, this is an identification guide to the birds of a popular tourist destination renowned for the variety and diversity of its birdlife.

The West Indies include the Bahama Islands, the Greater Antilles (Cuba, Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico), and the Lesser Antilles (Anguilla, Nevis and St Kitts, Martinique, St Lucia, Barbados, Grenadines, St Vincent). It is a tropical avifaunal region which includes such species as the tiny bee hummingbird, parrots, honey-creepers and todies.

For every resident species there are notes on diagnostic characters, local names, voice, habitat, identification and range. The birds are faithfully illustrated with 155 species shown in colour and a further 186 in black and white.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the easiest book for "in the field " use. 30 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Buyers need to be aware that relatively few species are illustrated in colour, and some not at all. As the intro states, the book is best used in conjunction with a North American Bird Book.

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent if limited in scope 27 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
As ever the Collins guides are the ones to have, and this is as informative and well-illustrated as the rest in the series. However, this is such a limited-interest title, one has to wonder why Collins keep it in print. It may be for nostalgic reasons - the author was reputed to have inspired Ian Fleming to use his name when trying to name his secret agent character.
