PROFESSOR JOHN CAREY, MERTON COLLEGE, OXFORD

"I spend my working life with the Collins dictionary permanently open. It is, in its way, a masterpiece. On 'New Scientist'it is also a bible: we take all our spellings from it (with few exceptions)…The dictionary has managed to take advances in science in its stride.”

“It is a stupendous achievement…the best and sanest interpretive dictionary I have ever seen.”
AUBERON WAUGH

Having used with satisfaction the1979 original edition of this dictionary for 20 years I expected the Millennium edition to be good. It is even better than I had expected. It has increased in size and content by some 20%, with larger pages and more of them, with a vast array of new words. The guiding headers at the top of the pages and the headwoird entries throughout are printed in a no-nonsense non-serif fony which even with my impaired vision I find unexpectedly easy to read. Besides answering the questions usual to ditionaries there are many encyclopedic entriies which make this a most valuable work of general reference. The usage notes might with profit be studied by those who think they speak English correctly. I am glad to see that this edition was wholly produced in the United Kingdom. As a one-volume English dictionary this must surely be the "best buy" avaialable today. Donald Christie.
