Collins is proud to announce a major new edition of its flagship dictionary. Updated with the latest terms to enter the language, Collins English Dictionary is not only comprehensive and authoritative, but also offers outstanding coverage of world, regional and dialect English.

Collins English Dictionary is a rich source of words for everyone who loves language. This new edition includes the latest words to enter the English language as well as a wide range of biographical entries. Usage notes give advice on using the right word in the right place, and thousands of etymologies trace the roots of modern English.

A clear, two-colour page design helps to make this dictionary accessible and easy to use, and the new virtual thumb tab makes it even easier to find the entry you are looking for. The dictionary includes a supplement on words on the cusp of entering the language, as well as an extended essay on how English has changed in the last 30 years, and looking forwards to the next 30 years. We also include charts to illustrate changing language trends over the years.

All definitions, examples, idioms, and usage notes are based on the Collins Corpus – our unrivalled and constantly updated 4.5 billion-word database of today’s English – making it an authoritative and up-to-the-minute reference source.

Product Description

Review

“I am absolutely thrilled to have a copy of the Collins English Dictionary. If I am ever cast off on a desert island, this is the book I want to have with me. What a wonderful gift.”
Judi Dench

“Wonderful coverage of current English … the layout is appealing to the reader”
reader review of CED 9th edition on amazon.co.uk

“The best single-volume English dictionary … the typefaces used are the most attractive of any dictionary”
reader review of CED 9th edition on amazon.co.uk

“I find Collins English Dictionary invaluable because is it an encyclopaedia as well a dictionary, and it stands up to really intensive use.”
John Grant, Crossword Editor, The Times

“The dictionary I reach for first …”
Roger Cooper, Sunday Telegraph

“It has offered to a current generation of students the possibility that the study of language might be exciting, as it was to Dr. Johnson. In short, I think it’s brilliant.”
Professor B A Harris, University of Dublin

“I spend my working life with the Collins dictionary permanently open. It is, in its way, a masterpiece. On New Scientist it is also a bible; we take all our spellings from it (with a few exceptions) … The dictionary has managed to take advances in science in its stride.”
Peter Wrobel, New Scientist

“I have never known a dictionary with such scope. The biographical entries are particularly useful. I would not be without it for anything.”
Professor John Carey, Merton College, Oxford

“The inclusion of so many proper names and colloquialisms is especially valuable.”
Penelope Lively

“It is a stupendous achievement … the best and sanest interpretative dictionary I have ever seen.”
Auberon Waugh, The Spectator

5.0 out of 5 stars Collins English Dictionary 11th edition 2011 18 Nov 2011
Format:Hardcover
A very comprehensive reference of modern-day English words and phrases, including UK, US and Australian usage. It is quite large due to Collins practice of assigning a new headword to each variant phrase rather than including them within one long section under one heading. The definitions are outstandingly clear and easy to read. It also has a good selection of scientific and technical terms, as well as biographical, historical and geographical references. A book for modern usage rather than obscure spellings. It also has a ribbon. Pronunciation is via the International Phonetic symbols and not the more natural ones used for example by Chambers. A very good buy - my only criticism is that its a bit heavy to hold.

4.0 out of 5 stars Modern approach dictionary 24 Feb 2012
Format:Hardcover
This is a large dictionary, one for the bookshelf, not a carry-around. It is comprehensive, well bound and the entries are presented pleasingly, with quite a lot of etymological and historical detail. It has a modern, contemporary approach to definitions, as well as including the classical ones, and what I liked was the wealth of biographical detail - why, even Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe gets a mention! This gives the work a slightly encyclopaedic aspect. Internet and computer language/jargon is well covered.

Good value for a modest price.

This is a good word-smiths tool, i use mine everyday and rarely has it let me down. It has a good selection of word and their meanings. One could go on and on but this dictionary is quite simply brilliant.
