I bought this as a resource for my French mad 13 year old son who says it's excellent as an additional resource to the school textbook and traditional dictionary. Suit someone keen to really get to grips with speaking French to native language users and get that much further with the intricacies of the language. Good price too and love the free delivery. Plan to buy French verbs addition as well. Very happy with speed of delivery and packaging too.

Disappointing 21 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback
I bought this book (unseen) to liven up AS/A2 essays with a few idioms or common sayings and possibly to drop into conversation when I'm in France. I don't think it is likely to help in either of these aims. Of the 250 idioms and phrases, I'd guess that well over half are very obscure, despite the claim that they are all "commonly used by French speakers today". My biggest concern is that if I included them in AS/A2 essays then the examiner/marker wouldn't understand them. For example, if I was to use the expression "aveler des couleuvres", to mean that someone had to do something against their will, the examiner could take the literal translation of "to swallow grass snakes" and think I'm completely mad.

The book is over-long at 230 pages - more or less one saying per page, plus a lot of fairly pointless cartoon illustrations. It could have been half the size or less, with the same basic content. I guess I'll be able to extract 20 or so idioms that I may be able to use but I could probably have achieved the same with half an hour searching on the Internet. Unless you are a very advanced French speaker who may be able to take the expressions on board more easily, I wouldn't recommend this book.
