I recently took the Collins Easy Learning Greek audio course on a trip to Zakynthos to see whether the course work would help me communicate with the locals. Right from the start, after listening to the first few tracks on CD1 which introduced key phrases, I noticed how impressed the Greek locals were when I greeted them accordingly. Understandably, some of the older Greeks did not speak English and so further communication was not possible but just to see their faces light up with the initial communication made the course CD's and book invaluable.
The course is aimed purely for the visitor to Greece but it gives an excellent foundation to opening up communication and I found the Greek people were more than happy to correct any mispronunciations and offer advice when to use certain phrases like ti kanis and ti kanete.
The course comes with three CD's which are divided into units and are easy to use, especially on a laptop, where you can skip about the units if need be. The speech was clear and precise and there were numerous occasions where the listener could speak Greek words and phrases to practice. Also, there is a booklet which I found very useful as a vocabulary tool. The book is also full of useful tips and is an excellent reference for recalling phrases and use of words.
I highly recommend this Collins Greek course to anyone travelling to Greece or even as an initial tool to anyone wishing to learn the Greek language.

I have always loved visiting the Greek islands for my holiday and thought it was about time that I tried to learn their language. This package is ideal to do just that. There are 12 units to follow which are on 3 cds (these can be downloaded onto your MP3 player if you have one). There is also a booklet which is quite usefull. I listen to the disks while driving to and from work and find the lessons or units quite easy to follow without getting boaring. There are also tips on how to memorise phrases and words which is very usefull. All in all this is an ideal way to learn the basic Greek language and also learn about the Greek culture.

LEARN BY REPETITION 22 Aug 2009
By DAVID BRYSON TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This elementary primer in modern Greek seems to me well thought-out and helpful. Unlike the Teach Yourself series (which I know from the Portuguese and Italian units although not from the Greek one) it sticks to the absolute basics and repeats the material several times over. Roughly speaking, it is all about asking for things, plus a little on how to tell people if you are feeling unwell and how to make your preferences known with regard to food and drink. There are no verb-formations, and pretty much everything that is not interrogative is in the present tense. There is some dialogue, still at this elementary level, but none of the strange `conversations' of the kind that exist only in language primers.

This makes the approach very flexible. Obviously we can replay or skip any track as we see fit. There are 3 cd's as well as the booklet, and it is very easy to follow the booklet from the spoken words. I would certainly recommend reading through the book before doing any listening. Apart from anything else this helps one dispense with the first track, which consists of an over-lengthy introduction telling us how good the course is and how it is structured, the latter being perfectly clear from the booklet itself. There is no vocabulary section, understandably considering how limited the vocabulary has been, but also consistently with the basic aim of this course to teach from the spoken word and not from print.

Obviously with Greek there is a new alphabet to learn, and for some strange reason it is given in lower case only. This will certainly not be enough for complete novices, who may well not recognise, say, a capital eta or a capital xi. I would also have welcomed a little more precision in the guide to pronunciation, especially with regard to the pronunciations of -nt-- and the letter gamma. Apart from that, if you do not fault the course for its limited aim and scope, I would call it very friendly and useful, and I can recommend it.
