I first encountered this dictionary in the 1970s, soon after the first edition, by Colin Smith, was published. It has served me well since but fell apart from long use. I was not disappointed by the ninth edition. now edited by a large team of experts and contributors. It gives up-to-date translations and examples from everyday modern usage. I particularly like the use of colour for headwords and the useful vocabulary in the centre section, dealing with many alternative ways of dealing with common situations. Samples of letters, invitations, essay writing and the like will prove helpful to students. It will probably serve me for another 30 years - if I'm still reading Spanish then. A must-have reference for all readers and students of Spanish and of English.

I have lost track of how many of these I have bought. I teach EFL and recommend it to all my Spanish students, but also to all my english-speaking friends.

I love this dictionary. Many of the key entries are full of useful examples. Simply the best! My only gripe would be that the Spanish verb tables are not as clearly presented as they might be.
