This book is really GREAT. I always have it handy and it has helped me in almost everything I've done. As a new house owner (and previous computer engineer) I have managed to do roofs, a terrace, plumbing, walls, electric stuff, windows, floors and just about everything with just the help of this book. It's comprehensive, it's detailed enough, nice step by step instructions and good tips.
I bought the B&B book at the same time and foor a while used and compared both. B&B is also good, but this is the BEST.

The only thing, it leans towards stone houses. Living in an old wooden house, I do sometimes need a Finnish book on wooden houses. But rarely, and some basic stuff is still covered in the Collins Manual.

Im not an idiot but I do need a lot of guidance with DIY. At times its a very subtle distinction, but it is a real one.
This book recognises that fact, and acts as a very patient tutor, and avoids being too basic to be useful.
There are many many good points about this book, but the one that really makes it for me is the pictures. Lots and lots of pictures. When reading just text I get lost quickly. Pictures keep me on track.
Easily worth double the money.

We have just bought our first house - a lovely Victorian terrace. It is structurally sound, but needs a bit of love and attention. Me and my man have absolutely no DIY skills or knowledge what so ever, so thought it best to get a book so we could learn the basics. Having read all the recommendations for this book on Amazon, I bought it and haven't been able to put it down since! This book covers the basic repairs to large structural and construction projects, plumbing, electrics, plastering, gardening as well as interior design ideas and suggestions. The information and help in this book is detailed, comprehensive and easy to follow. I am really looking forward to the weekend so I can get my tool kit out and have a go!! This book gives you the confidence to tackle jobs and projects that you might normally pay someone to do, and more importantly gives you the ability to understand the workings of your home. This is a brilliant book that I would highly recommend to novices and experts alike.

Just be careful with the lime mixes...

Excellent
I have this and the Readers Digest DIY Manual and this Collins book is far superior. More in depth and far more topics, I always end up referring to this one.
