The previous reviewer referred to this book as his 'bible' - which is my name for it too. I bought The Artist's Manual when I took up oil painting, because it provided the best answers to all my questions (specialist oil painting books mainly contained step-by-step painting instructions, but not much fundamental information). I now own two copies: one for my studio and one to take with me when I teach.
Every aspect of drawing and painting is dealt with in depth, but always on a general level, without bias towards a particular style. This manual helps you get the best out of your materials by explaining how they function; advises how to remedy common mistakes; and also provides a good range of quality artworks for illustration. Miles ahead of most how-to books.

I really don't know how they sell books like this at such a good price. On the back of the book it retails for £30. But this book is packed with information from how to stretch canvas, using about every medium one could think of, through colour mixing and tons more. This book is beautifully illustrated as well, with high quality photography and drawings. I've only just received the book less than 3 hours ago so I've skimmed through the pages picking out little snippets to read. I would seriously recommend this book even if you only have a minor interest in art, this is a superb book.

I have many 'Art' books but this one is like my painters bible! It really is worth having in your collection, whatever type of media you specialise in.. you need this book!
