This colourful book is inspiring with many examples of modern freeform calligraphy from various sources and guidance on how to achieve this look. Essentially, it provides help with the groundwork neccesary to write formal scripts (with many different textbook examples) which provides the neccesary skill base and confidence so you are able to competantly use a less formal style. Good advice on suitable backgrounds and materials to get you started, with more advanced techniques such as guilding and illumination explored. Plenty of handy tips and hints.

I have a large collection of calligraphy books, but none of them have vast array of Scripts, that this one has. A brilliant book for beginners and of great value to seasoned calligraphers.

A solid introduction to fundamental letter forms 5 Jun 2002
By Leland Buck - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This two-volume set is one of the most user-friendly calligraphy books available. It contains a good reference volume, with plenty of rich details about the history and function of various hands, and also contains a useful workbook to help guide the student towards mastery of various letterforms.

The art of calligraphy is one with long history and great usefulness. If only more books made the practice more accessible.
