This book is very compact, so is ideal for anyone wanting to keep luggage to a minimum but have a quick reference for the more common birds of the Indian Sub-continent. Some of the pictures are a bit lurid. Most of the names go by the English names (rather than the American), which is good because that is what the local people call them when refering to them in English. However, it creates confusion with the more comprehensive bird books. A lot of species are missing altogether, so if you're a keen birdwatcher, you'd be better getting one that covers everything. It has more information on the species it lists than pocket guides that include the whole species range, which makes it a useful second book for a keen birdwatcher to take alongside, for example, Grimmett, Inskipp and Inskipp.

As a keen but very amateur birder I found this book perfect. Only containing the most widespread birds it was light to carry and made identification quick and easy for those of us who are not tracking rarities and are not too concerned about subspecies. I took a heavy photographic guide also, but never used it in the end.

I have just returned from my trip to India and can confirm that this book was one of the best I took. I was not on a bird watching holiday as such, but none the less saw and, with its help, identified a multitude of birds both in towns and while driving between stops. You really need it too as there are very few familiar birds in India. Most exciting - thank you.
