More About the Author

I've always loved telling stories - as a child I'd make up stories for my sister and my cousins - and I started to write down my stories when I made them up for my sons when they were little.

My first published books were children's novels, and these led on to my writing primary literacy books for Collins and Oxford University Press. I really enjoyed the discipline of writing them, and of doing my best to make sure that children would enjoy and learn from them.

It was the research for these that got me hooked on historical research, which has contributed so much to my novels. My most recent one is DAUGHTER OF THE SEA, which tells the adventures of a fictional daughter of Sir Francis Drake, born to a beautiful slave girl in the Spice Islands, temporarily married to a Chinese sea-captain in Melaka, eventually setting off to England in search of her father. But what does she find there?

The novel I wrote before that was CYMBERIE, a heartbreaking tale of love and loss, centred round a great house in sixteenth century Essex.

Just recently I've gone back to writing for primary age children, with four little books for Ransom Publishing. They were great fun, particularly the fictional ones, The Mouse and the Magic Socks, and Dragon Island, both brilliantly illustrated by Brian Fitzgerald.

What next? Well, I'm doing research for another novel... and I've just been asked to read at the Essex Poetry Festival, so I've got to find ideas for new poems...

This book was great for my son, as they were studying castles at school. It was simple to read, and is actually the same books they use at school.
