4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good 12 May 2003
By Tea Tango VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback
This book is great for those of you who are starting the A Level course. Its easy to understand and provides ample background information.
However it doesn't go into 'excessive' detail, which can be a problem when if you are studying at home and not at college. I would advice buying another book along with this book.
The book itself is very appealing, the books and constant 'did you know' boxes which make chemistry revelant to our daily lives. Something the exam board hasn't learnt.

4.0 out of 5 stars Caters for all your chemistry needs 23 Feb 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
An A level text book of the highest calibre , this book covers all neccassary topics with particular reference to practical experiments and industrial practices. Although this book could be considered light on pages and carries a hefty price tag I have found no better course companion. The information is presented in a lively and interesting manner making even the most boring of topics a palatable chemistry experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good clear text book for A-level etc. 29 Sep 2008
Format:Paperback
This book, by current standards is a large book for A-level Chemistry. It is a very attractive, well illustrated book that takes nothing for granted. For those with a weak knowledge of GCSE chemistry, many of the topics are explained from scratch.

Each chapter has a collection of questions, many taken from past papers and the answers appear at the end of the book. The book is quite old now, so I don't know how it fits in with current A-level exams. It does however explain things much better than some of the really skimpy texts currently on offer.

It could also be used during the first year of University for a course requiring some Chemistry, where a revision of Chemistry is required.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good GAMSAT preparation 1 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I'm a non-science graduate preparing to take the GAMSAT entry test for medical school, which requires candidates to learn core topics of chemistry (as well as physics and biology). At approximately 600 pages, this textbook can seem a little daunting. However, each topic is written in a clear manner and there are lots of helpful diagrams along the way. It's a great resource for someone learning about Chemistry at this level for the first time. I would definitely recommend this for people preparing to take the GAMSAT.

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent content but lamentable quality! 29 Dec 2011
Format:Paperback
Collins Advanced Science - Chemistry is a useful chemistry primer, written in a practical way which makes at least some of the drier aspects of the science easier to get to grips with. However, like so many modern science volumes the facts are there but the grammar isn't. In the first couple of chapters alone there are several naive errors of the English language and I don't believe this is acceptable, simply because the message to be got across is scientific.

Furthermore, the book itself is of extremely poor quality. I have dipped into it five times now for a total of less than an hour and already the front cover is delaminating. Again not acceptable for a book that is intended for the rigors of a student's thumb and briefcase.

5.0 out of 5 stars PGCE Bible 3 July 2009
Format:Paperback
Starting a PGCE course in September and was looking for a book to refresh my basic chemistry knowledge, was recommended this book by the Head of Science in a local school. First impressions are very positive, the book has an excellent layout making it easy to read and covers all the key topics in sufficient detail. Only time will tell whether this book stands the test of time once I am actually teaching.
