I have recently started a weekly art class where we are encouraged to bring in our own materials but the medium chosen by the teacher is acrylic. I wanted to explore other mediums including pastel and I am finding this book invaluable. It is very easy to understand and you can get started straight away on sketching, shading, merging, etc. It also gives you tips on other implements to use. It's just what I needed to create quick masterpieces!

These are a great little range of books with lots of hints and tips to try.
They are smnall enough to carry in my painting set to use on location, and are easy to reference - I have several of them and have used them all for different situations and mediums.

Excellent little pastels book

It's a small book, very concise and well written with a wealth of material for beginners and self taught artists. Part of the difficulty in self teaching is filling in gaps -- this volume covers the basics well and more than that, gives challenging ideas and ways to use less expensive materials and pastels for someone who wants to take up pastel but doesn't really have the cash to go getting a large set of Unison or Sennelier. A pad of Canson mi-Tientes and a 24 color set of pastels or pastel pencils would be enough to work with what she's got for projects.
The sheer amount of information covered is wonderful. Also since it's geared to thirty minute art, the book's very good for encouraging sketching and drawing fast and copious. You could have fun with this with a sketchbook and a set of 12 color Conte or Nupastels too.
Oil pastel techniques are not covered, for that you'd want Bill Creevy's "The Pastel Book" which has a lot of information on using oil pastels.

Great for Beginners

Anything by Margaret Evans is wonderful instruction. This little book gives a few quick lessons and basic foundations for the beginner or for someone who wants to do a quick plein aire piece and can't think of where to start or how to end. It's easily followed because it is well written and clearly illustrated. Quickies are always great for building self esteem and Margaret's style supports student progress.

I bought Collins 30 Minute Pastels for my own use. Once I had it in my hands, I found it so well done that I ordered another copy to give to my adult daughter, who wants to begin painting in pastels. It is a nice size, tightly written and I think will be very useful to both of us.
