5.0 out of 5 stars Better than what's played on the radio! 28 Sep 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Living Colour comes through after a 10 year sabbatical! Sacred Ground was previously released on the greatest hits collection PRIDE, where it seemed that the beat was a drum loop, hastily put together so Epic/Sony could make a quick buck . Tomorrow Never Knows (the beatles)gets treated to a vivid interpretation add in some Doug Wimbish bassisms and Vernon Reid magical madness, all clean cut.
The stand out song is FLYING - about 9/11, "It's a story about a guy who goes to work at the Trade Center on September 11 and decides that today is the day that he's finally going to ask out Carmen, a co-worker," says Glover. "Ironically, they do wind up together, but it's certainly not the way he imagined it. It's the idea of taking this huge, tragic event and boiling it down to its smallest essence, which is that it was about people. There were so many people there that day, going to work, punching time clocks. Who knows how many of them got to realize their dreams on that final day?" (from an LC bio)
Song W/o Sin - Starts off HEAVY ROCK and the end winds into this tablas or clay drum ending...sweeet!
Back in Black - AC/DC cover - makes you listen to the lyrics, again! nice choice.
Nightmare City - is a bad brains-esque reggae rock vibe. Tight!
Choices Mash up/Happy Shopper - Happy Shopper is actually another cover song by either Mark Stewarts mafia or Audio Active (japanese dub band) industrial laced song about consumerism, midway through the song, you get treated to a nice change of pace too.
Pocket of Tears - GREAT SONG, and a great song LIVE in concert!
All in all, a beautiful album by one of the most underated bands around. if you can check them out in concert, you will not be disappointed. Living Colour rocks! Thank you for getting back together and allowing me enjoy rock music again!

4.0 out of 5 stars Come back the Living Colour, all is forgiven 11 May 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I must admit I loved living Colour back in the 80s and 90s so I was very interested to see that they had released a new recording in 2003. Vernon Reid's guitar playing retains its distinctive quality and together with Corey Glover's vocals the Living Colour sound is a fresh as it ever was. CollideØscope is classic Living Colour and if you liked their previous offerings you won't be disappointed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing... but still worth a listen 3 Oct 2003
Format:Audio CD
Living Colour's last album, Stain, released back in 1993 showed a band that still hadn't lost their edge. Largely dropping the "many different music style" approach that characterised Time's Up, they concentrated on a harder, darker sound which resulted in one of the best rock albums ever made. When the split was announced in 1995 they released a greatest hits collection (Pride) which contained four new tracks that seemed to be largely continuing the greatness that was Stain and it was therefore a shame to see them disappearing from the music scene.

Fast forward to this year and we see them reformed with a new album and my anticipation couldn't have been higher. So it's a shame that I really can't find that much to rave about on Collideascope. One of the other reviewers was correct in identifying Flying as the stand out track of the album; it's truly a great song but part of what makes it stand out is that it follows the turgid boreathon that is Operation Mind Control. Flying represents a form of relief that makes you realise they haven't lost the ability to write good songs; something I seriously was beginning to doubt after Mind Control.

Unfortunately they then follow it with In Your Name, which could have been a great track had it had better musical direction - the naff sounding synth noises on it (presumably meant to be indicating some kind of computer game war noises or something) truly ruin what could have been a great track.

Whilst most of the rest of the album isn't as bad, neither is it truly great either, with the cover of Back In Black standing out as well as the intriguing Nightmare City. I also have to take exception to the version of Sacred Ground that they've included with this release; the version from Pride was a great, hard rock track and Corey Glover's voice had the right amount of indignant rage that the theme of this song demanded, whereas the version here sounds like it's been watered down.

All in all I'd have to say that this one is for hardcore fans only and certainly isn't going to convince any new listeners of Living Colour's greatness. If you want to convert new listeners then get them to listen to Vivid, Time's Up or Stain (all fantastic albums that deserve to be in anyone's collection) but Collideascope is one to give them once they actually like the band... otherwise you're more likely to put them off.
