Product Description

A triple set of BBC documentaries presented by Professor Brian Cox. 'Wonders of the Solar System' (2010) focuses on such phenomena as Saturn's rings, the solar flares of the Sun and the deserts of Mars to demonstrate how the forces that shaped our world are also responsible for creating some of the most breathtaking sights in our solar system. In the follow-up series, 'Wonders of the Universe' (2011), Cox continues his exploration of the universe and its effect on human life. Vast, complex and almost infinite, the universe has been the subject of human fascination and scientific exploration for thousands of years. Its properties can seem impossible to grasp, but this series uses the evidence found in the natural world around us to explain the fundamental principles that underpin the laws of nature such as light, gravity, matter and time. Finally, in 'Wonders of Life (2012) Cox tells the story of the origins and history of life, from the fundamental laws which govern its creation, to the myriad species that populate our planet. Tracing how light, gravity, time, matter and energy combined 3.7 billion years ago to begin a process which ultimately led to the huge diversity of life we now have on Earth, Cox visits locations around the world to reveal how life came to adapt and develop in the most unusual and unexpected places.

Product Description

Wonders of the Solar SystemPrepare to immerse yourself in an alien world as if you were standing there yourself. Giant ice fountains rising over 100km high; an ocean hidden beneath a frozen crust of ice; storms twice the size of Earth coloured blood red by a vortex of dust and gases; immense volcanoes that could rip a planet apart - this series reveals the true and awesome beauty of our solar system. Using the very latest breathtaking images sent directly from space, groundbreaking CGI transforms the static into the dramatic. Travelling from the Sun to the far-out reaches of Neptune, the series has at its heart the latest scientific knowledge beamed back from the fleet of probes, rovers and telescopes currently in space, and offers a vivid and unprecedented tour of the world beyond our planet. The universe is almost impossible to comprehend - 13.7 billion years old, 93 billion light years across and filled with over 100 billion galaxies, each containing hundreds of billions of stars. This series explains the vast phenomena of deep space by re-examining the familiar on Earth. Taking science away from telescopes and labs, Wonders of the Universe travels into the natural world and across the planet. These journeys are combined with spectacular images of space. Using stunning high definition CGI, this programme offers views of giant supernova, gamma ray bursts and recently discovered galaxies, and sheds light on the furthest reaches of the universe, just moments after its creation.Wonders of LifeThis beautiful and definitive series reveals how, 3.7 billion years ago, a few fundamental laws gave birth to the most complex, diverse and unique force in the universe - life. Light, gravity, time, matter and energy are the building blocks of everything, from the smallest microbe on Earth to the biggest galaxy. Today, there are thought to be as many as 100 million different species on Earth. Wonders of Life tells the story of the amazing diversity and adaptability of

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 30 Mar 2013

Brian Cox entertains you with many of the latest theories of astronomy and physics, and makes it fascinating. His obvious fervor for the subjects is infectious. The graphics, both real and computer generated are impressive and informative. While he doesn't go into great depth, which would probably go over my head, he covers a broad range and conveys a lot of information in terms the average person can understand, without talking down to them. He really seems to enjoy sharing his interest and knowledge of the subjects. These programs bear watching more than once, to absorb all the information in them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why I choose the box of Prof. Brian Cox 28 Jan 2014
By Jampavo

the images of the universe are stunningly beautiful as the pictures taken on our earth with an HD camera. The explanation of Prof. Brian Cox is a miracle of didactics. How do you explain something in a simple way? Great fashion and simple examples that he knows how to find. I have this box already recommended to friends and they give the same response: stunning and overwhelming!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not your average documentary.. 7 May 2014
Verified Purchase
Really enjoyed all series when on tv so had to get on blu-ray (especially when I spotted the price!)

Subject matter explained in a way most documentaries can only dream of, watching with my 8yo son who has a interest in science and nature (especially the solar system) and for him to follow and understand was great.

If you haven't seen this but have an interest in the subject matter, Prof Cox's enthusiasm in his work is highly infectious and turns what could be run-of-the-mill into something much more entertaining.

Entertained and informed - thoroughly recommended!

Is there no end to what this guy can do; professor of physics, rock musician, diver, mountain climber, photographer, and best of all, brilliant presenter of science and nature.

This is what the BBC is known for. Well structured essays on science, an entertaining, informative narrative coupled with absolutely astounding photography. Professor Cox travels the world to present his stories with clarity and humour without ever talking down or trivializing the content. He make complex ideas understandable and simple concepts profound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awe inspiring 6 April 2014
Verified Purchase
This collection is excellent and awe inspiring as an educational set for the classroom. Despite the big bang theory being overtaken by recent events the delivery from the Prof, (guess he may not be bothered about his title), is fantasticly down to earth for students of all ages. The variety of locations and exploits in the series along with the stunning photography makes this a 5 star hit. No brainer to show the kids even if their school is not teaching them physics or astronomy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Each episode full of wonder. 5 Jun 2013
By John

In this collection of Wonders, Prof Brain Cox manages to amaze and excite with wonderfully simple ways of explaining simple and complex scientific theories. I don't think anyone with the slightest bit of interest in science could be disappointed with this set. If you don't remember a day of science from school you'll still be able to follow these series, as they where wrote to be accessible to all. They may even make you want to learn more after they have finished.

As for the Blu-Ray quality it is fantastic as you would expect from a BBC production. Each of the 3 series comes in individual cases that fit in a cardboard cover.
