The John Wayne Signature collection was an impulse buy for myself, and it turned out to be an inspired purchase!! We all know JW isn't the greatest actor that ever was but he does know what he's good at and these films prove it.

Each DVD comes in its own box,'The Searchers' and 'Rio Bravo' are two disc sets, crammed with interesting extras. Infact each DVD has two or three extras attatched to it, which doesn't always happen.

All five films have stunning scenery, shoot outs and some great one liners packed in. My personnal fave is 'Rio Bravo' but they couldn't have chosen five better westerns from 'The Dukes' amazingly large catalogue. Its interesting to see him develop as he ages throughout the films and how he changes his screen persona to suit this.

If you have a John Wayne fan in your family or friends then this would be a fantastic gift. If like me, you enjoy a western or five(!!), buy this as you wont be dissappointed.

Here are the 5 films...
'The Searchers' 2 disc edition
'Rio Bravo' 2 disc edition
'The Cowboys'
'Chisum'
'Cahill: United States Marshall'

By Bob Salter TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
This collection contains two of the Dukes very finest Westerns, one that is very good indeed and two that can be best described as average. That is always the problem when you buy into a collection. If you are a fan of the big man it will not matter too much.

"The Searchers"(56) is many peoples favourite film of all time and often makes critics top 100 movies. It is simply epic and looks absolutely fabulous filmed by John Ford in Monument valley. Wayne as Ethan Edwards the embittered civil war veteran hunting his niece kidnapped by Comanche Indians across the American wilderness, becomes the stuff of legends. It is truly one of the great films and Wayne becomes a great actor in it. He gives a towering performance and should have got his oscar for this instead of "True Grit".

"Rio Bravo"(58) directed by Howard Hawks is a magnificent study of men under pressure and the value of strong team work, both Hawksian themes. Wayne plays John T Chance trying to keep cold blooded killer Claud Akins in jail against the will of the murderers brother, who has a small army at his disposal. It is another of the Dukes great roles. Dean Martin also gives a bravura performance as Waynes drunken deputy who comes good. It is another truly great film.

Next we have the very interesting and very good "The Cowboys"(72) which was definitely one of Waynes better later films. He sort of slipped into a comfort zone in old age and seemed to go through the motions relying on his massive screen persona. But in this film he works with a new young director Mark Rydell who brings out a fine performance from the old war horse. The film involves Duke as a rancher using young boys as cowboys for his herd. They have problems with rustlers on the long drive, and the Duke slugs it out with their leader Bruce Dern in a heart wrenching finale where the director makes a bold and brave decision. An excellent Western.

The last two I will not dwell on. They films where Wayne was in auto pilot and was simply going through the motions. In "Chisum"(70) he plays a cattle baron based on a true character who knew Billy the Kid. In "Cahill US Marshall"(73) he plays a tough lawman cashing in on the Rooster Cogburn character and aided by Neville Brand. Both films were directed by Andrew V McLaglen who was a solid director who was unable to bring an individual stamp to his films. He was certainly no John Ford or Howard Hawks as these films demonstrate quite clearly. Both are very average Westerns propped up by the big man.

"The Searchers" and "Rio Bravo" both come in two discs with interesting extras that are well worth having. Overall this a good collection that could have been great. If only "Red River" and "The Shootist" could have been included at the expense of Chisum and Cahill. Now that would be some collection. But overall this is still a good collection. Recommended.

Wonderful Wayne 3 July 2011
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
John Wayne Collection(7 Disc) (The Searchers 2Pk, Chisum, Rio Bravo 2Pk, The Cowboys, Cahill U.S Marshall) [DVD]

This is John Wayne at his mean and moodiest best. "The Searchers" is an iconic film of its genre, and of the films that I grew up with. Unfortunately it is now seen as quite racist in its attitude to the native American Indians, and sexist in its attitudes to women; but this probably accurately reflects honestly the 1860s frontier attitudes.
I have a large number of Wayne's films of all sorts and eras, and I love his physical presence and his fluid movements on screen. "Rio Bravo" is also a classic. Overall I commend this box-set to you.
