I was really looking forward to getting this book, expecting great things. The group of unsigned brooches Kathy Flood has collected to illustrate this book, ranging from top class to tacky and made of quality castings and rhinestone chain to resin and fabric, are WONDERFUL!. BUT the design of the illustrations and contrast on some of the photographs has really let her down. Also the text does not look professional.

PHOTOGRAPY-Apart from the front & back pages all the photographs are on a black background. Tho this is great for jewellery pieces with loads of contrast, it just doesnt work for the majority of the pins/brooches. On page 27 you can hardly see the lovely one off brooch, earring and ring set in 10ct gold. Some pages work well but the majority don't and 13 or so pages has far too many brooches on one page.

TEXT As I said earlier the typesetting of the text is NOT professional. The organisation isn't consistant- colour and size ot typefaces vary and look like pages copy and pasted from WORD rather than them having been professionally typeset for a book. The are massive white spaces under the info on many pages- WHAT a waste of space when many brooches could be shown here in details!

CRITCISM ASIDE Kathy Flood's writing is really interesting to read and some of her comments and descriptions are good fun! I have learned a lot from reading this book. BUT I hope the 'SIGNED' book in preparation will be much more professional. I will buy it as tree brooches are my obsession but I would like to be able to email Kathy on E--y and congratulate her! THIS BOOK has wonderful content which is let down by poor presentation. If you have NY Trowbridge and J Gallina, buy it, but not a good first book on American Christmas tree pins/brooches.
