Most people know the stories around Colditz from the BBC TV series and the books by P.R. Reid and others. This book takes you that little bit further in that it is more visual: almost like a scrap book of the castle but with a lot more written detail. At last the reader gets to see the castle, the guards and the prisoners through many fascinating photographs; some have been published before, many have never been seen outside of private collections. The narrative is from many different perspectives with sections based on the prisoners accounts and others from that of the guards. The author has interviewed many of thos invloved and those interviews form the core of this book which often reads as if it was written by the individuals themselves.
I cannot recommend this book more highly to anyone with even a vague interest in the stories of this castle, POW camp and all those involved. Amazing.
