From the synopsis given above, this book is clearly the compilation of a weekly Guardian newspaper column which was published under the title "Diary of a Provincial Man." The various entries are available on the Guardian website, though I suspect that 1 or 2 are missing. I guess it was just a matter of time before a compliation novel was published.

Funnily enough, I had already collected those column entries as an unofficial pdf e-book. If anyone is interested, it can be downloaded from

I did find a couple of continuity conflicts with the chronologically later novel "Adrian Mole and "The Weapons of Mass Destruction."
