5.0 out of 5 stars Nice, bargain-priced collection of essential Verne 18 Mar 2014
By Librarian - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a generous and particularly well-formatted selection of Jules Verne's works at an especially low price. Yes, these can all be obtained separately as public domain freebies, but a dollar is well worth paying for the convenience of instantly having so many in one handy bundle.

The translations are old, standard, public domain ones, the ones you may have enjoyed reading in the past. I mention this because these older English translations do not always provide the full texts of the original French versions; recent, new translations do, but being under copyright, can be comparatively expensive. (The price of any ONE of them alone will easily cost more than ten times the price of this entire collection.) Happily, the translation of "A Journey to the Center of the Earth" used here is the authentic (older) one in which the main character is correctly named Professor "Liedenbrock" rather than "Hardwigg," that name appearing in another so-called "translation" which is substantially a re-write by someone who thought he could improve what Verne originally wrote. (The bogus version appears in several other ebook collections and is still being sold separately to unwary ebook purchasers). Sadly, THAT is the version many of us once read and thought was by Verne. If that happened to you, this correct version will be especially worth reading.

If you've never read Verne's works before, this is a good way to introduce yourself to him; included are more than a half-dozen particularly great SF/Adventure novels later made into memorable and quite delightful movies which have since become classics in their own right.

Full as this collection is, however, it is not complete. While this provides about 27 titles, there are larger, 30+ title sets in the Kindle Store, but they are not always as nicely formatted and usually cost a buck or two more. Some of them contain period illustrations, but some may also contain the aforementioned bogus translation. More than a few reach their higher story count by including (and counting) parts of "Mysterious Island" as separate works; other novels may be similarly divided and counted. One must be very careful when choosing a Verne set.

The question to consider is this: How much Verne do you really wish to read? I greatly enjoy Verne, but quite frankly, not all of his works measure up to his best-known ones, and the (now) old-fashioned quaintness that may enhance those titles of which we are fondest also tends to detract from some of the others. There are valid reasons why a select number of his stories are qualitatively better and more popular than the rest; I would personally prefer to read and re-read (and enjoy) those than force myself to plod through some of the others. Nevertheless, to get virtually EVERYTHING Verne ever wrote (both the titles included here, about 20 more in English, and perhaps a dozen more untranslated and still in French!) you'll have to visit the Kindle Store and type "Delphi Verne" in the searchbox. That gigantic, mind-boggling, Kindle-memory usurping Delphi set is recommended primarily for devoted students of Verne, die-hard fans, and literary completists (who can read French).

This inexpensive e-artnow edition doesn't provide everything Verne ever wrote, but it does provide a hefty batch of his better-known works, (including ALL his greatest ones--the fabulous "classics"), more than enough to satisfy most readers and Verne lovers. These days you rarely get so much for a dollar.
