Book Description

30 Nov 1989 0140180710 978-0140180718 New edition
Written at various dates before World War I, these 12 stories contain themes that were to re-emerge in E.M. Forster's later work. They demonstrate his belief in freedom, self realization and a spiritual honesty that may be used to defeat the lies of repression.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful! Pure joy. 5 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
This is the most wonderful collection of short stories. They are full of light, full of spirit, full of love, full of wisdom. E M Forster is one of the greatest writers of the XXth century, and his work will last much longer than most of his contemporaries'. I hope this stories will find new readers among the young generations. E M Forster's love to nature (including human nature, which expresses itself through love), and his opposition to the alienating machinery of modern human society, are more relevant than ever in these apocalyptic times we are living.
But above all, reading these stories is on of the best reading experiences I've ever had. I't just pure joy. I'm buying more copies for my friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique 26 Oct 2007
Format:Paperback
Superb little stories - truly unique. Whereas Forster only hints at the mysterious and the fantastical in his novels, here he wallows in the stuff! Also remarkable is 'The Machine Stops'; to my mind the only science fiction to anticipate the internet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting and thought provoking stories abound 12 Dec 2000
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
It's some years since I first read this book and still these short stories are vivid, imprinted on my memory. Those of you who benefit from or depend upon the internet for daily interaction will enjoy The Machine Stops, it is both remarkable and prophetic!

I know I love this book but I gave this copy to a friend and have not heard his verdict - hope he enjoyed the stories as much as I did when I read them
