Product Description

Product Description
In this edition of his collected shorter fiction we can see why Somerset Maugham, celebrated as the author of Cakes and Ale and Of Human Bondage, is also regarded as a master of the short story. Open this substantial volume at any page and you will find evidence of his extraordinary art. Without narrative tricks and in a plain prose style, Maugham introduces us to the enormous range of characters and experiences he encountered in an unusually long life and recorded with the cool accuracy of a good doctor diagnosing disease. There are many famous stories here; some of them made into films such as The Force of Circumstance, Rain, P & O and The Colonel's Lady; others, less famous, charting mundane but mysterious events in all four quarters of the world.

About the Author
Nicholas Shakespeare is the author of The Vision of Elena Silves, The High Flyer and The Dancer Upstairs. A major film of The Dancer Upstairs, starring John Malkovitch, is currently in production, for which Nicholas Shakespeare has written the screenplay. He has also written a much acclaimed biography of Bruce Chatwin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good quality, but not complete, 25 Jun 2007
In spite of it's 848 pages the book (of course) does not contain all short stories by W. Somerset Maugham (as far as I know round about 120). So I still have to wait for a hardcover-edition with all short stories.
Included are the following 31 stories:
- In a Strange Land
- Rain
- The Fall of Edward Barnard
- The Pool
- Mackintosh
- The Happy Couple
- The Unconquered
- Before the Party
- The Yellow Streak
- The Vessel of Wrath
- The Force of Circumstande
- The Alien Corn
- Virtue
- The Bum
- The Treasure
- The Colones's Lady
- The Human Element
- Footprints in the Jungle
- The Book-bag
- The Back of Beyond
- Mayhew
- Mirage
- The Letter
- The Outstation
- Red
- Miss King
- The Hairless Mexican
- Giulia Lazzari
- The Traitor
- His Excellency
- Sanatorium
The book also comes with an introduction, a select bibliography and a chronology.
It is made very nice with a red cover and a dust-wrap. The quality of the binding also seems to be o.k.
As I consider Maugham to be one of the greatest short story writers and I love to read him there is only one possibility: 5 Stars

(P.S.: If there are any mistakes in my text please apologize: I'm from Germany)

5.0 out of 5 stars Maugham - Superb Craftsman, 13 April 2009

(REAL NAME)
I've been reading Maugham stories for years. When the need for a great tale hits me, he's my man!
Now I own this great book with 31 of his finest. 'Rain', 'Before the Party' and 'The Colonel's Lady' are my favourites.
Maugham once said: "The best style is the style you don't notice." He lived up to his words. Paradoxically, he is THE stylist and craftsman amongst writers.
The long introduction by Nicholas Shakespeare (not sure if he's related to the bard) is an excellent way to start your reading.
Strongly RECOMMENDED!
